This position reports to the Dean for Teaching and Learning. This position provides faculty support and direction focused on teaching innovation and faculty development. The Assistant Dean supports professional development for adjunct and full-time faculty with a focus on innovative course delivery and pedagogies that enhance academic achievement, especially for underrepresented populations. Key areas include High-Impact Practices (HIPs) such as learning communities, Competency-Based Education (CBE), undergraduate research, emerging educational technologies, and aligning teaching practices with student learning outcomes to improve transfer success and job placement. Additional responsibilities include overseeing compliance and quality assurance for online and flexible learning courses, collaborating with academic deans to ensure that faculty-student interaction, academic rigor, and accreditation requirements for online programs are consistent across all modalities. The Assistant Dean also supports the management of the Learning Management System (LMS) and ensures all online materials are accessible.
Responsibilities
Provide guidance and supervision to the Teaching and Learning team in coordination with the Dean for Teaching and Learning.
Provide leadership for reviewing and implementing new instructional technologies and effective strategies for online, hybrid and other flexible learning modalities.
Develop faculty training and professional development opportunities related to flexible delivery modalities.
Coordinate online pedagogy and technology projects targeted to improve the effectiveness of online instruction, engagement, retention, and success.
Implement effective strategies to determine professional development needs, changes in teaching and learning skills, and the impact of teaching and learning activities on student outcomes.
Follow national trends, state and federal regulations and accreditation standards to ensure institutional compliance.
Collaborate with faculty, staff, and administrators to develop guidelines, mentoring, and additional supports, related to the needs of diverse groups of faculty, including new, full-time and adjunct faculty, maintaining a focus on continuous improvement in teaching and learning.
Maintain relationships with IT, LMS and VMS vendors, oversee contracts, and support for third-party integrations and learning tools.
Serve as a college representative / liaison for various statewide and/or national organizations (i.e., Illinois Community College Online Consortium and Midwest State Authorization Reciprocity Agreement Consortium for Distance Learning Authorization). Serve on various college committees, as appropriate.
Perform other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
Master's degree in related field required. Formal training in instructional technology and/or instructional design preferred.
Three years of higher education experience with faculty development, instructional technology/design, or curriculum development, including at least two years with college-level online learning programming, required.
Two years supervisory or project management experience required.
An understanding of best practices in online teaching and learning design required.
Experience with learning management systems and instructional technology administration required.
Experience with maintaining accessibility requirements, such as ADA Section 508, universal design strategies in online learning required.
Strong problem-solving skills, project management skills, and the ability to work collaboratively with diverse stakeholders.
