Job Description

Position Summary

The Project Engineer will focus on diesel engine and generator set system and component design and test, while supporting these projects from the technical proposal stage through commissioning in the customer facility. This position reports to Fairbanks Morse's Navy Segment and works closely with engineering, quality, program management, purchasing, operations, and external customers.

Principle Duties and Responsibilities


  • Be the primary technical interface with the customer.
  • Understand the contract scope of engineering work to track, prioritize, coordinate, and execute engineering deliverables.
  • Lead the development, release, and maintenance of product & project documents (system schematics, bills of materials, test procedures, reports, etc.).
  • Justify, document, and communicate engineering-based decisions to meet project goals and objectives.
  • Complete engineering releases and changes through the PDM system, including providing inputs and guidance to Design/Drafting group to complete required drawings.

  • Meet with internal and external customers and suppliers to review contract status, review design & test documents, and resolve contract specification/scope of work.

  • Complete design & qualification work to replace obsolete components and to complete product improvements & cost reductions.
  • Support engine production and test with problem solving, root cause analysis, disposition of non-conformance, and executing corrective actions.


  • Write and release test reports demonstrating compliance with customer approved test procedures, including documentation and justification of all deviations.
  • Assist Technical Support with existing installations and programs
  • Support new engine sales and upgrade proposals, including specification reviews, compliance matrices, and estimating engineering work.

Qualifications, Skills, and Educational Requirements


  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Mechanical or Marine Engineering, or an equivalent degree, in addition to 3+ years of equivalent systems experience.
  • Strong preference for 3+ years of experience in diesel generator set knowledge and experience, including operation, troubleshooting, ABS rulesets, USCG ACP, and MIL-SPECs related to marine diesel engines.
  • Strong preference for 3+ years of experience fluid system design and component selection experience
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
  • Basic proficiency in 3D CAD (Solid Works preferred)
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office software including Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.
  • Willingness and flexibility to travel to interact with customers.
  • English technical proficiency required. Technical proficiency in French, German, or Danish a plus.
  • Must be able to qualify for Government Security Clearance as required. Active Secret clearance strongly preferred.
  • This position requires access or potential access to Unclassified Naval Nuclear Propulsion Information, which is Not Releasable to Foreign Nationals (NOFORN) data. Therefore, to meet NOFORN requirement, you will have to provide proof of U.S. Citizenship and attest that you do not have dual citizenship. Acceptable proof of U.S. Citizenship is a U.S. Passport, U.S. Birth Certificate or Naturalization Certificate.
