ROLE OVERVIEW: The Technical and Environmental Manager in the pulp and paper industry is responsible for overseeing technical operations and environmental management within the facility. This includes ensuring that all technical processes operate efficiently and meeting production targets while adhering to environmental regulations and sustainability goals. The manager will be responsible for implementing strategies to improve both technical performance and environmental impact, ensuring the company's operations are aligned with industry best practices and legal requirements.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES: This is a full-time position requiring flexibility and responsiveness to both technical challenges and environmental management issues. The position will be based at the pulp and paper plant site, with occasional travel to meet regulatory authorities or participate in industry events and training.
Technical Operations Management:
Oversee and optimize technical processes in pulp and paper production, ensuring high quality and efficient production.
Collaborate with engineering and production teams to identify areas for process improvement and cost reduction.
Lead troubleshooting and problem-solving efforts for technical issues related to production, equipment, and systems.
Ensure the proper maintenance and calibration of test equipment.
Environmental Compliance:
Monitor and ensure compliance with environmental regulations and standards, including air and water quality, waste management, and chemical handling.
Prepare and submit environmental reports to regulatory authorities as required.
Conduct regular audits and inspections to identify any potential environmental risks or non-compliance.
Work with external consultants, environmental agencies, and legal teams to ensure that all environmental guidelines and laws are met.
Manages the Nutrient Exchange program.
Sustainability and Environmental Initiatives:
Develop and implement sustainability programs aimed at reducing the environmental impact of production processes.
Promote the use of sustainable materials, energy-efficient processes, and the reduction of waste and emissions.
Evaluate and recommend environmentally friendly technologies and innovations for process optimization.
Drive initiatives to minimize water consumption and energy use across the plant.
Team Leadership and Collaboration:
Lead, mentor, and train the process and environmental engineers to enhance their skills and ensure high standards of work.
Lead the environmental group in daily activities.
Collaborate with cross-functional teams (production, R&D, quality control, etc.) to align technical and environmental objectives.
Ensure the team is educated in best practices and current trends in both technical operations and environmental management.
Health, Safety, and Risk Management:
Ensure that safety procedures are followed in both technical and environmental aspects of production.
Promote a culture of safety and environmental awareness throughout the plant.
Address any health, safety, or environmental incidents and implement corrective actions.
Reporting and Analysis:
Analyze data from technical and environmental processes to generate reports for upper management.
Track key performance indicators (KPIs) related to technical operations, energy use, waste management, and sustainability goals.
Provide recommendations based on data-driven insights to improve operational efficiency and environmental impact.
Provide data to outside firms for Tax incentives, Training incentives, and other Agencies that provide rebates for Industrial production.
Required Skills and Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Pulp and Paper Science, or a related field (Master’s preferred).
Proven experience (5+ years) in a technical and environmental management role within the pulp and paper industry.
In-depth knowledge of pulp and paper production processes, environmental regulations, and sustainability practices.
Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to manage complex projects and initiatives.
Excellent leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills.
Knowledge of industry standards, safety procedures, and environmental impact reduction methods.
Proficiency in using technical software and environmental management tools.
Have experience with 6 sigma programs, with at least a green belt certification.
Preferred Qualifications:
Become certified in Environmental Management (ISO 14001, etc.) or related areas.
Experience in implementing energy-efficient or green technologies.
Strong network within the pulp and paper industry for collaboration on technical and environmental challenges.
