Moran Towing Corporation (www.morantug.com) has an exciting opportunity available as an Assistant Manager of Mariner Training and Development in our New Canaan, CT office. This is a hybrid role that will require you to work in the office 3 days per week. This full-time, exempt position reports to the Director of Enterprise Learning and Development.
Position Summary
The Assistant Manager of Mariner Training and Development plays a pivotal role in designing, managing, and delivering comprehensive training programs for Moran’s Deck, Engine, and Safety personnel. This role is essential in ensuring Moran’s operational excellence and supporting its commitment to zero harm to people, property, and the environment.
As part of Moran’s Training and Employee Development team, the Assistant Manager of Mariner Training and Development assists in the development and oversight of all mariner training initiatives with a specific emphasis on engineering and deck department skill competencies, including auditing current deck and engineering training, collaborating with operations and engineering departments to develop new training, and instructing engineering and deck related courses. This position requires expertise in assessing training needs, creating hands-on and classroom learning opportunities, and ensuring alignment with industry regulations and company standards.
This position is based in New Canaan, CT, enabling close collaboration with the Training and Employee Development team and senior management.
Specific Responsibilities include, but are not limited, to:
Instruct and Manage Current Training Programs (30% of time)
Instruct and assist in managing the coordination, implementation, facilitation, and evaluation of existing in-person and virtual mariner training and development courses and programs, with a focus on New Hire Boot Camps, Engineering, Operator, and NSAP training programs.
Actively deliver training to officers, crew, and shoreside staff virtually and in person, ensuring learning and skill proficiency objectives are met.
Support the execution of live training courses by traveling to Moran’s port offices and training locations throughout the year as required.
Support Engineering-Focused Training (15% of time)
Support ongoing engineering-focused training for vessel crews, ensuring alignment with maintenance best practices and safe operational procedures.
Collaborate with the engineering department to identify training needs and develop targeted programs that enhance engineering skills and safety awareness.
Manage and Update Training Books and Reference Manuals (15% of time)
Oversee the maintenance and continuous improvement of all training books and materials for Deck, Engine, and Safety personnel.
Collaborate with subject matter experts (SMEs) to ensure training content is accurate, up-to-date, and aligned with industry best practices and regulatory requirements.
Maintain a record of updates and ensure training materials are distributed effectively across all ports.
Develop and Deliver New Training (20% of time)
In coordination with senior management, assess, plan, develop, deliver, and continuously improve new mariner training and development courses and programs to meet regulatory and company requirements.
Continuous Improvement of Training Material and Processes (20% of time)
Develop and implement feedback mechanisms for training improvements.
Assess effectiveness of self-directed and instructor-led training through scalable, sustainable, data-driven methodology.
Manage the maintenance of, and record of changes to, mariner training materials, manuals, and training books.
Audit training compliance in each port to verify that training and skill assessments are being performed to required standards.
Promote Corporate Culture (Always)
Promote a positive and common culture which embraces the 3Ls (Listen, Learn, Lead).
Provide continuous, ongoing support to all levels of ship-docking management in the areas of mariner safety and training, promoting our safety and training tools.
Be a knowledge expert in Moran ship docking for policy, regulatory, compliance issues, and industry standards.
Perform other related responsibilities as assigned.
Required Qualifications
BS/BE degree from a maritime college or related field.
5 years’ experience in the maritime industry in a Deck, Engineering, Training or Safety field.
Strong knowledge of marine transportation subjects (Deck, Marine Engineering, ISM - Safety Management Systems, etc.).
Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Office programs – PowerPoint, Outlook, Excel, Word.
Excellent verbal and written English communication skills.
Experience in training and/or presenting.
Demonstrated critical thinking and problem-solving skills, excellent customer service skills, and ability to participate in a team setting as well as interact with senior management.
Preferred Qualifications
MS/MA in a business, maritime, or education/training discipline.
Proven experience in maritime education and training as an Instructor or in delivering mariner training programs.
Current USCG Deck or Marine Engineering License.
Proven experience in public speaking.
Excellent verbal and written Spanish communication skills.
Understanding of Behavioral Science.
Experience in developing blended learning training programs that foster innovation.
Experience in employee engagement, coaching others, and providing constructive feedback.
Physical demands of this position include the ability to:
Bend, kneel, reach overhead, and lift to 55 pounds occasionally.
Working Conditions
Ability and willingness to work in the New Canaan, CT office a minimum of 3 days per week and work remotely the remainder of the week.

Our target pay range for the Assistant Manager of Mariner Training and Development position is $75,000 -$110,000 per year. This pay range represents Moran's commitment to pay transparency and is a reasonable estimate of possible compensation for this role at the time of posting.
