The starting salary for this role starts at $75,001-$84,375 per year.

About the role:

The Accountant III is a highly skilled and purpose-driven accounting professional committed to enhancing the lives of Pen Air Credit Union’s members and employees through financial excellence and innovation. This role is responsible for overseeing complex accounting tasks, conducting advanced financial analysis, and ensuring compliance with evolving regulatory requirements. As a key contributor to the credit union’s financial operations, the Accountant III leverages technical expertise to support critical decision-making, drive process improvements, and strengthen the organization’s financial foundation. The Accountant III leads technical initiatives, mentors junior staff, and serves as a subject matter expert across accounting functions. Through collaboration, attention to detail, and a commitment to continuous improvement, this role supports Pen Air’s purpose to enhance lives and deliver exceptional service.

Major Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Financial Operations & Reporting: Perform and oversee advanced accounting duties for the monthly, quarterly, and annual close processes, including preparation and review of reconciliations, journal entries, and complex adjustments. Lead the preparation of financial and regulatory reports, ensuring accuracy, timeliness, and compliance with all relevant standards. Prepare, review, and present financial and management reports tailored to the needs of the audience, supporting decision-making and organizational transparency. Mentor and guide junior accounting staff in technical tasks, fostering a collaborative and growth-oriented environment.
  • Strategic Analysis & Insights: Conducts advanced financial analysis to identify trends, risks, and opportunities, delivering actionable insights to support decision-making. Transform complex data into actionable strategic insights, empowering executive decision-making with well-founded recommendations on both operational and strategic matters.
  • Project Lead: Lead significant, complex accounting projects, including the implementation of new standards, technology integrations, and process automation & improvements, ensuring alignment with organizational objectives. Coordinate project activities, including assigning tasks, monitoring progress, and resolving challenges to meet deadlines. Collaborate with management to provide regular updates on project progress, identify risks, and implement solutions to achieve project goals.
  • Technical Research & Compliance: Conduct thorough research and interpretation of complex accounting issues, delivering clear and actionable recommendations to management. Oversee and validate research prepared by staff to ensure accuracy and compliance with standards. Review and validate selected technical research conducted by team members, ensuring thoroughness and clarity before presenting to management. Monitor changes in accounting standards, regulations, and best practices, assessing their impact on the organization. Support internal audits, external audits, and regulatory examinations by preparing required documentation and addressing inquiries effectively. Act as a subject matter expert for audit inquiries, proactively identifying and mitigating potential risks to streamline audit processes.
  • Strategic Communication & Collaboration: Act as a liaison for resolving complex issues, facilitating communication across departments, and ensuring alignment on financial matters. Prepare and deliver clear and concise presentations to communicate financial results, analyses, and recommendations to management, senior management, and other stakeholders. Tailor presentations to the audience's level of understanding and effectively convey complex financial information. Collaborates with cross-functional teams to implement strategic improvements proactively addressing financial and operational challenges. Guides accounting staff, fostering a continuous learning environment, and ensuring best practices.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Experience: Five to Seven years of progressive, similar, or related experience. Preferably at least 2 years in a senior or advanced role.
  • Education/Certifications/Licenses: Bachelor’s degree in accounting, Finance, or related field. Certified Public Accountant (CPA) or Certified Management Account (CMA) license
  • Interpersonal Skills: The ability to motivate or influence internal or external senior level professionals is a critical part of the job, requiring a significant level of influence and trust. Obtaining cooperation and agreement on important outcomes via frequently complex, senior level dialogues, as well as a professional level of written communication skills are essential to the position.
  • Other Skills: Advanced knowledge and experience in interpreting and applying Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and Financial Accounting Standards Board’s (FASB) Accounting Standard Codification (ASC). Proficient in Microsoft Office applications and experience with ERP systems (e.g. Workday). Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to interpret and communicate complex data with the ability to make independent decisions and communicate recommendations in an effective manner. Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to convey technical information effectively. Highly proficient in prioritizing tasks, communicating expectations, resolving conflicting requests, while utilizing interpersonal skills to maintain effective working relationships. Detail-oriented with a strong commitment to accuracy and efficiency. Capable of managing multiple priorities and deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
