ORGANIZATIONAL SUMMARY:
The Student Success division at the University of South Florida, is comprised of 60 departments, providing students with academic support, engagement opportunities, health & wellness services and enhancement of the educational experience.
The Academic Services team, which has a dual report to Undergraduate Studies and Athletics, provides services, programming, functions and outreach for USF student-athletes that results in satisfactory academic progress and graduation of student-athletes. Academic Services maintains a staff of 13 full-time employees, a team of 4-5 post-baccalaureate interns and full complement of tutorial staff to serve a community of approximately 500 student-athletes representing 19 NCAA Division I sport programs.
POSITION SUMMARY:
The Academic Services Administrator (Working Title: Learning Specialist) in Undergraduate Studies/Academic Services in Athletics provides support and management for the Student Learning Services program, which is designed to support student-athletes who may be at heightened academic risk, have learning challenges, and/or diagnosed learning disabilities. In addition to providing intensive academic support to a designated caseload of student-athletes, this position assists in the development and implementation of a variety of educational initiatives, programming, training, and workshops for student-athletes and staff. This position will report to the Assistant Director of Student Learning Services and must adhere to all NCAA, Conference, and University rules and regulations.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Student-Athlete Caseload:
- Provides intensive academic support to student-athletes who may be at heightened academic risk, have learning challenges, and/or diagnosed learning disabilities.
- Develops and applies learning strategies and study skills designed to best support student-athlete growth and success.
Assessment:
-Assists academic assessments/testing processes.
-Collaborates with the Academic Services staff, Behavioral Health Coordinator, Students with Accessibilities Services (SAS), and Psychological Services to help develop individual academic support plans.
-Interprets and evaluates diagnostic results.
-Provides recommendations/referrals for further testing and utilizing of accommodations as necessary.
Programming/OPS Employee Supervision:
-Oversees the USF Athletics Mentor Program.
- Supervises, manages, and trains 5-10 OPS student workers who are employed as USF Athletics Mentors.
- Schedules all mentor requests submitted per semester.
-Maintains communication between mentors, staff, and student-athletes.
-Complies weekly and semester reports regarding program demand and usage.
Committees and Department Representation:
- Represent Academic Services in meetings and on select committees across UGS and campus.
-Collaborates with the Academic Services staff, Behavioral Health Coordinator, Students with Accessibilities Services (SAS), and Psychological Services to help develop individual academic support plans.
Training and Workshops:
-Assists with the development and implementation of a variety of educational trainings and workshops for student-athletes and staff, including Tutor and Mentor Training and Intern Development Program Training.
Performs other duties as assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
This position requires a Master's degree in education or a field of study related to the academic program, or a Bachelor's degree in those same fields with a minimum of two years of experience.
FLSB1310 Equivalency:
4 years of directly relevant experience may be substituted for bachelor's degree.
6 years of directly relevant experience may be substituted for master's degree.
PREFERRED:
This position requires a Master's degree or a Bachelor's degree with a minimum of one year experience as a Learning Specialist, teacher/instructor, or related position; Experience in working closely with learning deficient students, developing relevant programming and utilization and education of appropriate learning strategies and techniques; Experience working with student-athletes, coaches, support staff and administration in an intercollegiate athletics department at the Division I level; Experience in utilizing and reading educational assessments and psych-educational testing results and implementing effective strategy and support;. Experience utilizing Teamworks/Retain.
