Kleinfelder is seeking a field biologist to join our team as full-time staff. Candidates residing in Northern California will be prioritized. This position will remotely report to supervisors based in the Oakland, Sacramento, or San Francisco, CA office.

Key Responsibilities

The responsibilities of this position may include, but are not limited to:


  • Assisting with environmental regulatory compliance for clients through protected species surveys, compliance monitoring, and documenting compliance activities through written logs and reports. Field work may include physically challenging outdoor conditions, regular travel to project sites, and occasional overnight stays

  • Performing accurate and detailed biological resource accounts by synthesizing on-site survey findings and desktop resources

  • Writing and reviewing technical reports and making recommendations on avoidance and minimization measures to address potential project impacts to special-status species

  • Conducting focused and general preconstruction surveys (e.g., nesting birds, rare plants, amphibians)


  • Demonstrating strong technical and academic expertise in applied biological sciences (e.g., herpetology, terrestrial biology, ornithology, botany)

  • Effectively solving problems and adapting to various challenges

  • Communicating clearly and professionally, both in writing and verbally

  • Maintaining a satisfactory driving record and successfully completing a background check


Required Skills and Experience:

  • 3-6 years of relevant experience, with a preference for candidates with 2+ seasons of field experience

  • Bachelor's degree in biology or a related field; master's degree candidates also encouraged to apply

  • Comfortable working in physically demanding outdoor environments and conditions, with expectation of regular travel to project sites including overnight stays

  • Strong technical and academic background in applied biological sciences (e.g. herpetology, terrestrial biology, ornithology, botany).

  • Knowledge of Bay Area and Central Valley protected species and their habitats a plus

  • Familiarity with federal and State regulations governing management of natural resources in California

  • Possess CDFW Scientific Collecting Permit or have sufficient experience amassed to apply for the permit within 1 year

  • Effective problem-solving ability

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills

  • Proficient with MS Office and iPads, including the use of ArcGIS applications for the purpose of navigation and data collection

  • The ability to work both independently and with a team

  • Must have a satisfactory driving record and complete a background check

Preferred Skills and Experience:


  • Prior experience in natural resource consulting

  • Experience with environmental review processes (CEQA/NEPA)

  • Extensive familiarity with California flora and fauna

The expected salary range for the position is displayed in accordance with the California Pay Transparency Law. Final agreed upon compensation is based upon individual qualifications and experience. Salary range: $25.81 - $43.09 hourly
