The Senior Associate, Community Conservation Programs will develop and deliver dynamic, high quality, and integrated environmental interpretation and education, bird conservation, habitat restoration, and conservation science programs in the Finger Lakes region. They will lead programs at Montezuma Audubon Center (MAC), the Montezuma Wetlands Complex, and off-site outreach to support Audubon’s strategic plan in Habitat, Climate, Policy, and Community Building.
The role includes engaging community groups, forging partnerships, collaboration on shared projects, managing volunteers, enhancing various habitats, leading conservation science projects, and leading programs in person. Most of the activities take place either at the MAC, at New York State Department of Environmental Conservation areas, US Fish and Wildlife Service properties, and in a diverse array of communities and reach a range of ages from two to adult. Strong candidates will take a thoughtful approach to community engagement and will seek opportunities for projects that meet Center goals, neighborhood/ community goals, and Audubon’s mission. While the focus is on the Center’s conservation projects, the Senior Associate, Community Conservation Programs also provides instruction for our school programs, birding tours, and scout programs.
The work of the Senior Associate, Community Conservation Programs shall also:
grow and diversify our network through community conservation projects in underserved communities;
incorporate inclusive programming, events and volunteer opportunities;
address barriers which make natural spaces and conservation education inaccessible to under-represented and underserved communities;
contribute to a program that provides conservation action outcomes through community conservation programming (e.g., Bird-friendly Communities), environmental education, and partnerships/collaborations with underserved communities;
advance Audubon’s equity, diversity, inclusion and belonging strategies.
This is a full-time position that will not exceed 35 hours/week, generally Tuesdays-Saturdays, 9am-4:30pm, but those hours can vary considerably based on the program and project schedule. Evening hours will regularly be necessary. The position requires a significant amount of outdoor activity, hiking in varied terrain, driving in all seasons, and superior presentation skills. Some programs will be offered off-site in the surrounding communities ranging from Syracuse, Auburn, Geneva and Rochester.
Compensation:
$45,000-$55,000 / year
Design and implement community-based conservation programs at priority sites in and near the MAC that engage new and diverse audiences and improve habitat.
Organize and supervise stewardship programs, partnerships, and projects; work with Center staff and Community Partners to incorporate Audubon priority content (e.g., native plants and lights-out) into programs and develop tools and resources appropriate for the region.
Seek to engage traditionally under-resourced communities in Community Conservation activities, identify opportunities for collaboration, and share best practices and learning. This may also involve coordination with additional members of the Center’s team as well as Audubon CT/NY Community Conservation staff.
Assist in recruiting and scheduling volunteers from diverse backgrounds to assist with advocacy, habitat restoration, and conservation science projects.
Conduct community science and conservation action projects and other monitoring of sites in the Montezuma Wetlands Complex that adds to the data and ecological knowledge of the sites.
Implement and lead programs for families, adults, and children at the MAC to include all aspects of programming, planning, creating lesson plans, set up and clean up, evaluation, and follow up. Types of programs include, but are not limited to, Next Generation of Conservationists programs, public programs, summer and vacation camps, youth hunter education camps, school field trips, Scout programs, after-school programs, outreach programs, teacher training workshops, birding hikes, snowshoe hikes, paddles and driving tours.
Incorporate equity, diversity, inclusion, and belonging into our educational programming. Participate fully and productively in staff meetings, planning efforts, and other shared staff duties.
Create interpretive materials, such as educational brochures and displays for the public.
Work with the MAC staff on all aspects of MAC programming, including promotion, registration, scheduling, pre-visit communication of programs, prepare teacher curriculum packets, development of education materials, classroom and field site maintenance, and curriculum development.
Collect and care for inanimate and live collections; acquire, create, and maintain educational artifacts, equipment, and supplies. Duties may include researching, purchasing, maintaining, and storing such equipment and supplies.
Interact with and work with the general public: Audubon members, teachers, board members, and government officials. This includes answering phones, fielding natural history questions, and performing other administrative duties.
Assist with the preparation and distribution of newsletters, flyers, and proposals.
Articulate the missions of the National Audubon Society, Audubon Connecticut/New York, Montezuma Audubon Center, and the Friends of the Montezuma Wetlands Complex to the community.
Participate in Audubon Connecticut & New York’s all-staff meetings and retreats; participate in all-staff work days when possible; engage in Montezuma Audubon Center conservation staff meetings and planning efforts.
Assist with Audubon staff to ensure that equity, diversity, inclusion and belonging principles are incorporated and followed in all aspects of our work.
Support a culture of philanthropy, including public funding efforts.
Collaborate with colleagues across the Americas including through joint planning and execution of shared priorities.
Other job-related duties as assigned.
Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in Conservation, Ornithology, Environmental Interpretation, Education, Natural Resource Management, or related field.
2+ years’ experience developing and conducting bird conservation, habitat restoration, and/or educational program activities for all age groups and diverse audiences.
Knowledge of, and commitment to, the conservation of birds and other wildlife and their habitats, as well as basic natural history and environmental science.
Demonstrated experience working with groups of children, adults, and families.
Experience with developing guided and self-guided interpretive tools and programs preferred.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills, as well as strong organizational, time-management, and judgment skills. Must be self-motivated, detail-oriented with the ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
Proficient in basic office administration.
Must possess a valid New York state driver's license, or the ability to obtain one in a timely manner.
Obtain First Aid, CPR, AED, certifications and maintain certifications.
Ability to traverse all the major pathways and trails of the MAC and on uneven terrain, lift up to 50 lbs. with or without accommodation, and knowledge of proper paddling techniques a must.
Willingness to work flexible hours, including weekends and evenings, as requested.
