Here is an opportunity to join one of the most well-known companies in the Maritime Industry. Moran Towing Corporation ( www.morantug.com ) has an opportunity available for a Port Captain for Moran New York. This is a full-time, salaried, exempt position reporting to the General Manager.

POSITION SUMMARY:

The Port Captain is a Subject Matter Expert (SME) on tugs / towing operations and assists aboard assets with operations, safety, and engineering. The Port Captain is expected to regularly board each asset and will collaborate with operations, safety, and engineering to ensure regulatory compliance and customer services are met. Furthermore, the Port Captain will interact with marine personnel assisting with education and training to ensure effective safe operations are met. This position is responsible for promoting and ensuring adherence to company policies, procedures, and regulatory guidelines.

The Port Captain effectively works in an unsupervised capacity and communicates with employees shoreside and afloat. The incumbent must work both individually and as a team member, demonstrating good judgment, initiative, and excellent organizational skills. Hours of work are Monday through Friday, 9am to 5pm, but the incumbent must be available, if required, during off-hours, weekends, and holidays.

SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE, but are not limited, to the following:

Provide technical oversight to Operations and Captains to include, but not limited to, the following:


  • Safe use of vessel operating conditions

  • Precautions to severe weather advisories

  • Safety specifications to equipment onboard

  • Compliance checks and procedures requiring details and training.

  • Wheelhouse electronic inventory and location

  • Wheelhouse electronic equipment and preventative maintenance program

  • Review and advise effective deck maintenance programs.

  • Review voyage planning and advisement on safe transit navigation issues.

  • Line program adherence, including inspection, proper use, and replacement.

  • Crew training and professional development.

  • Captain competency and performance review

  • Advise asset preparations to pre and post hurricanes.

  • Assist as necessary with asset delivery.

  • Coordinate proper checks and testing post shipyard delivery.

  • Perform Visible Leadership Visits with crew aboard.

  • Contribute to the continued promotion and implementation of the Safety Management System (SMS).

  • Recommend improvements to the SMS.

  • Assist in responding to bid inquires for safe towage operations.

  • Advise with towing arrangements, as necessary.

  • Assist with damage / Injury investigation and Corrective Actions

  • Participate in port safety committees as appropriate.

  • Assist with engineering surveys, compliance, or other technical difficulties.

  • Interact with pilot organizations for professional relationship building.

  • Assist with any other directive with operations or mariner involvement.

  • Perform new asset survey as necessary and advise acceptance.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:


  • Minimum 5 years of work aboard Towing Vessels as Captain or Mate

  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Programs

  • Valid driver's license and Transportation Worker Identification Card (TWIC).

  • Proven successful management experience and demonstrated strong leadership skills and decisive decision-making.

  • Ability to work effectively individually and as a team member.

  • Demonstrated strong written and verbal communication skills, ability to take initiative, multi-task, interpret data, speak publicly, operate in stressful situations, and make quick decisions.

  • Demonstrated good judgment, initiative, and organizational skills.

  • Intermediate level Microsoft Office computer skills, e.g., Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:


  • Bachelor's degree in transportation or marine engineering. Work experience will be factored with education.

  • Operations experience in the maritime industry.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS OF THIS POSITION INCLUDE THE ABILITY TO:


  • Ability to board a vessel while moored via barge landing or underway via crew boat and withstand tug motion and high temperature areas for periods of time.

  • Ability to: cross bulwarks; frequently walk, including on uneven surfaces; climb ladders and stairs; stoop; bend; stand or sit for prolonged periods of time; and use a keyboard and computer screen.

  • Ability to travel, including air travel.

PAY TRANSPARENCY:

Moran Towing Corporation offers generous benefits, opportunities for professional growth, and competitive salaries based on geographic location. Our target pay range for the Port Captain position is $115,000 -$130,000 per year. This pay range represents Moran's commitment to pay transparency and is a reasonable estimate of possible compensation for this role at the time of posting. The final salary for this role will be determined based on careful consideration of a variety of factors, such as the candidate's exact location, experience, and expertise related to the qualifications.
