Location: Nashville, Tennessee
The administrative Lieutenant, operating under general supervision, has general administrative command responsibility for the function of organizational units/shifts or programs such as training, professional standards, campus security operations, special events, records and communications, and student security. Performs crime prevention duties and other general Campus Safety and Security Services. Supervises and manages all patrol personnel, i.e. sergeants and officers for a particular shift, in general police work as well as manages the department fleet.
Daily Operations
Crime Investigation and Enforcement: Investigate suspected crimes on campus, including thefts, vandalism, and disturbances. Report findings of investigations accurately and in a timely manner. Take appropriate law enforcement action, including making arrests or detaining suspected individuals as necessary. Utilizes the camera monitoring system in investigations. Addresses security concerns to higher staff.
Shift Personnel Management: Oversees the patrol personnel on each shift as it pertains to compliance, duty assignments, PTO, personal needs, discipline and professional needs. Ensures the orders of command staff are disseminated to the patrol staff and that the vision of the department is being met. Manages and finalizes time for submission to payroll. Final approver of any action taken on behalf of or against an officer or sergeant. Researches and implements patrol strategies to combat crime trends.
Fleet management: Conducts regular maintenance and cleanliness checks of department owned vehicles. Monitors and addresses safety and functional concerns of the vehicles and schedules regular maintenance with third-party mechanics. Ensures all vehicles are being utilized in accordance with departmental and Campus policies. Investigates incidents involving the vehicles and addresses concerns.
Required Skills
The ideal candidate should possess a comprehensive understanding of campus policies, city, and state laws, along with knowledge of effective investigation methods and the campus geography. They must react quickly and calmly in emergency situations, adeptly determining the appropriate course of action to ensure safety. This role requires the ability to follow oral and written instructions, establish and maintain effective working relationships with students and the public, and enforce laws firmly and tactfully while respecting the rights of others. Additionally, guards should demonstrate proficiency in operating law enforcement equipment and express ideas clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
Required Education and Experience
High School diploma or equivalent. 3-5 years security work experience or equivalent experience, and possession of an armed guard license from the Tennessee Bureau of Commerce and Insurance necessary. Must be at least 21 years of age and have good moral character. Supervisory experience recommended.
