Reporting to the Associated Director, the Business Systems Analyst (BSA) will work as a Research Administration and Compliance Solutions team member to deliver software solutions to the research administration and research compliance community. Harvard University's research portfolio relies on a set of software applications, both custom and vendor-provided, supporting the research life-cycle. The team is responsible for designing and enhancing those IT systems and supporting the academic and administrative staff using the system to support their research projects. This position focuses on the system roadmap, configuration, integration, and support of the Huron suite of applications, which include OAIR (conflict of interest, outside activities), Agreements (data use agreements), Data Safety (research data management/compliance), and ESTR (IRB, human subjects). This position will also include analysis and technical work focused on building reports and integrations to streamline business processes for the research administration community.

The BSA works closely with the user community, fellow team members, technical partners, and vendors to design, test, implement, and validate solutions to support ongoing and emerging needs.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate;
    • to draft systems specifications and designs detailing the logic, configuration, and security requirements to be implemented and perform corresponding configuration steps.
    • with business systems analysts, product managers, and vendor partners on production, integration, and reporting support for enterprise applications. This includes in-depth analysis, troubleshooting, researching, and recommending resolution options to ensure systems remain operational and data integrity is upheld within applications.
  • Meet with business partners to understand and document system's needs, identify workflows, and propose solutions.
  • Participate in the identification of change management requirements and assist in the development of training materials, end-user communications, and marketing materials.
  • Design, develop, and test Harvard-specific software customizations and reports.
  • Develop test plans and test system functionality to ensure that new products, enhancements, bug fixes, and patches correct identified problems without introducing regression issues. Log, track, and follow bugs through the development life cycle. Perform manual and automated testing.
  • Coordinate User Acceptance Testing (UAT), including developing test plans, coordinating user participation, and following up on bugs or issues raised during UAT.
  • Assist in planning and conducting user group meetings.
  • Serve as a resource to senior management, product managers, and business systems analysts on product and/or business expertise areas.
  • Work with vendors, as appropriate, to report and resolve bugs. Work with vendors to coordinate, test, and roll out new system releases.
  • Attend relevant conferences and trainings.
  • Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned.


Typical Core Duties:

  • Work at a high level within a team on most phases of service analysis and consider the business implications of technology applications to the current and future business environment
  • Collaborate with stakeholders to translate business needs into systems requirements and scoping
  • Contribute to the definition of systems and reporting requirements, conduct gap analysis, and identify feasible alternative solutions that meet defined business objectives
  • Perform user needs analysis, product evaluation, selection, customization, testing, implementation, and support
  • Participate in the development of plans and policies for a unit/school
  • Abide by and follow the Harvard University IT technical standards, policies, and Code of Conduct


Basic Qualifications

  • Minimum of two years' post-secondary education or relevant work experience


Additional Qualifications and Skills

  • 5+ years of experience in a technical environment, including 2+ years of hands-on experience in business analysis.
  • Proven;
    • problem-solving, analytical, and organizational skills, with attention to detail and the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
    • ability to adapt quickly to new technologies and environments, with flexibility and a collaborative approach.
  • Strong interpersonal and written communication skills, with a demonstrated service mindset and customer relationship-building abilities.
  • Ability to synthesize complex business needs into technical solutions.
  • Knowledge of research administration (e.g., grants management, conflict of interest, IRB) is a plus.
  • Familiarity with
    • iterative development, software processes, Agile/Scrum methodologies, and metrics is preferred.
    • tools such as Atlassian (JIRA, Confluence), SQL, and Huron Research Suite products is a plus.
  • Able to work both independently and as part of teams in dynamic and fast-paced settings.
  • Experience with test execution, including regression testing, and hands-on knowledge of ERP or research administration systems is strongly preferred.
  • Proficiency with;
    • Windows Server management, including configuration, troubleshooting, and maintenance.
    • Excel, Word, MS Project, PowerPoint, and other desktop applications.
