Job Summary
Per Diem, Day shift with call Job Summary: The perioperative nurse assesses the patient preoperatively; plans care during the surgical intervention, implements those nursing actions and evaluate the outcomes. This position is responsible for perioperative nursing, coverage of Central Sterile Supply on an as needed basis, and scheduled outpatient procedures requiring assistance by the physician. Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities - Demonstrates expertise in operating room procedures and can function independently in the performance of other surgical procedures. - Establishes and implements standards of practice that ensure safe, effective and efficient nursing skills. - Is able to interpret and complies with JCAHO, OSHA, and other federal and state standards. - As a perioperative nurse, assesses the patient preoperatively, plans care during the surgical intervention, implements those nursing actions and evaluate the outcomes. Ensures the patients record is complete with all necessary pre-operative information. Documents. - Conducts a nursing assessment and develops a plan of care for all patients upon admission. - Identifies and prioritizes activities that are necessary to meet patient needs. - Evaluates the effectiveness of intraoperative measures taken, documents them and reassesses to take additional actions as needed. - Communicates and collaborates with other members of the health care team. - Maintains a procedural log as it pertains to the operating room and other units. - Covers central supply responsibilities in times of illness/vacation and as needed. - Ensures that appropriate supplies are available and replaced as used/needed. - Uses proper aseptic and sterilization techniques. - Assists in the orientation and supervision of other personnel who work in the perioperative setting. - Highly recommend CNOR certification within two (2) years of assuming position. - Oversees the operation of the operating room and central supply in the absence of the Perioperative Services nurse manager. - Maintains confidentiality of patient information in accordance with Hospital policy and applicable statutes and regulations.
Qualifications
Essential Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required for the Position Knowledge of: - Knowledge of current nursing standards of practice required. Skills: - Must be able to demonstrate adequate technical skills and judgment to function unsupervised during on-call, other shifts, and weekend hours. Ability to: - Ability to tactfully communicate with both internal and external customers. - Ability to handle stress and work in emergency situations. - Ability to assist patients on and off equipment. - Ability to move quickly in the event of an emergency. - Ability to stand and walk approximately ninety percent (90%) of shift, with frequent climbing, bending, reaching, stooping, squatting, and helping to lift objects and/or patients ranging from five - (5) to three hundred (300) or more pounds. - Ability to use of fingers and hands to operate all department-related equipment as described on the Department checklist. Additionally, must use telephone, calculator, fax, computer and other related office equipment. Credentials and Experience Required - Graduate of an accredited nursing school required; Bachelor's Degree in Nursing preferred. - At least two (2) years of prior perioperative experience required/preferred. - Current valid Massachusetts Registered Nurse ("RN) license required. - National certification in areas of expertise (CNOR, CEN, CCRN, etc.) preferred. - BLS/CPR certification required within one week of hire. AHA & ARC accepted. - ACLS and PALS certifications required prior to completion of orientation or within 6 months of hire, whichever occurs first. Special Requirements - Must be avai lable to stay overnight should need arise during patient transports off island. - Must be able to rotate to other units, as assigned. - Must be willing to work additional shifts, as assigned. - Must be available to work in the case of a declared hospital emergency.
