Job Summary
Summary
Responsible for providing expert guidance and support in the area of human milk management by working closely with lactation consultants, nurses, and other healthcare professionals to promote and support optimal infant feeding practices, particularly breastfeeding and human milk utilization. The Human Milk Specialist provides education, counseling, and hands-on assistance to mothers and families, facilitates milk expression and storage, and promotes evidence-based practices related to human milk feeding.
Essential Functions
Provide education and counseling to expectant and new mothers on the benefits of breastfeeding and human milk feeding.
Collaborate with lactation consultants and nurses to support breastfeeding mothers.
Educate and assist mothers in establishing and maintaining lactation, including proper milk expression techniques and the use of breast pumps.
Oversee the operation and coordination of a milk bank and donor milk program within the hospital.
Promote and facilitate skin-to-skin contact and early bonding between mothers and newborns.
Collaborate with hospital leadership and the interdisciplinary team to develop, review, and update breastfeeding and lactation policies and procedures.
Participate in community outreach programs, support groups, and educational initiatives to promote breastfeeding and human milk utilization.

Education
Bachelor's Degree Nursing required

Experience
Lactation Support/Breastfeeding Education Experience 2-3 years required
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
In-depth knowledge of breastfeeding techniques, human milk composition, milk expression, storage guidelines, and safe handling practices.
Strong understanding of infant feeding and lactation physiology, as well as common breastfeeding challenges and interventions.
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to provide empathetic, non-judgmental support to breastfeeding mothers and families.
Demonstrated ability to work effectively as part of a multidisciplinary team and collaborate with healthcare professionals at all levels.
Strong organizational and time management skills, with the ability to prioritize tasks and manage a diverse caseload.
Familiarity with hospital policies, regulatory guidelines, and accreditation standards related to breastfeeding and human milk management.
