Reporting to the leadership of BD's Digital Engineering, 3D Printing & Prototyping team, this is a technical position where the engineer will contribute significantly to exciting, high-visibility projects and collaborations across the BD R&D portfolio. The successful candidate will be responsible for executing 3D Printing and Additive Manufacturing solutions in support of complex technical problems. An aptitude for technological management, hands-on learning, and communication with internal and external stakeholders (e.g., partners) is required. A professional background in multiple 3D Printing and/or Additive Manufacturing systems and processes is required. The ideal candidate should have hands-on experience using modern CAD tools (e.g., SolidWorks or other equivalent 3D modeling) and related software packages (e.g., Magics, Netfabb). The candidate will understand and have hands-on experience with 3D printing processes from the front end (e.g., print orientation, setup, printer operation) through the back end (e.g., support removal, post-processing, shipping), safe laboratory practices.
The Engineer II must be able to effectively collaborate with team members, local and remote, from varying backgrounds and seniority levels. They should have strong oral and written communication skills. The successful candidate will have a passion for 3D Printing and drive to learn and grow.

Job Responsibilities:
Operate 3D Printers, i.e. - Carbon DLS, Stereolithography, Polyjet, DMLM, etc., and develop expertise in the use of the 3D Printing technologies for medical product applications.
Analyze and process machine accuracy data, logs, and style codes to continuously improve accuracy, resolution, feature detail, and optimize machine performance.
Provide engineering technical support through direct interaction with product development engineers/teams to examine options and develop plans to leverage 3D printing tools for their specific part needs.
Scheduling and coordination of 3D Printing machines, communicating with Manager, Team, and Internal BDX customers to ensure prompt turnaround of job requests.
Perform as a team lead as needed.
Actively research and implement new technologies and best practices within 3D printing and post processing.
Maintain state-of-the-art 3D printing and post processing competencies through training courses, seminars, and industry conferences.
Perform routine preventative maintenance of the 3D printing machines.
Under guidance and direction, utilize additional engineering tools (Pro Engineer, SolidWorks, mold flow, general scripting, etc.), in conjunction with 3D Printing technologies to develop innovative prototyping solutions.
Participate and contribute to the activities of the broader Digital Engineering group by performing analyses to optimize part quality and manufacturability for BU project teams.
HYBRID - 4 days per week ONSITE in Research Triangle Park, NC - 1 Day remote. Ideal candidate will reside within commuting distance.
Education and Experience:
Required BS in Engineering with 2 years of relevant experience. MS/Ph.D. Preferred plus 1 year of relevant experience.
Relevant experience in R&D academic or industrial environments is desired.
Experience in 3D printing.
Experience with CAD software.
Experience working in a laboratory environment.
Medical industry experience is preferred.
Knowledge and Skills:
REQUIRED:
3D Printing / Additive Manufacturing (e.g., DLP, SLA, PolyJet, FDM)
Graphical design (e.g., SolidWorks or other equivalent 3D modeling)
MS Office (Teams, Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Outlook).
Ability to plan and operate to meet tight scheduling.
Experience with 3D printing post processing methods.
Experience collaborating and contributing to multidisciplinary teams, including the ability to influence without direct authority.
Experience with Digital Calipers or similar measuring devices.
Safety in a laboratory setting.
Ability to adapt quickly to change.
Strong oral and written communication skills and team collaboration skills
Ability to use personal computers for word processing and data manipulation.
Critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
Thorough understanding of laboratory safety requirements and the SDS System.
PREFERRED:
Experience working under a quality system.
Knowledge of statistics and use of statistical packages for analyzing datasets.
Experience with optical or coordinate measuring systems.
Knowledge of materials science related to plastics.
Experience with effective packaging and shipping practices.
A thorough understanding of the Design of Experiment principles, testing methodology, and effective interpersonal and organizational skills is required.
Ability to adapt quickly to changes in program and project priorities.
Ability to simultaneously manage diverse tasks and issues, using a "hands-on" approach in a fast-paced environment.

Physically able to lift 40 lbs.
Work Environment:
Research lab environment requires working with chemicals and occasionally biological materials (blood, tissues, etc.)
