The Director of Safety, Health & Environment (SHE) will be responsible for implementing and delivering the SHE strategy including environmental sustainability and resilience across Boston Site Operations including Waltham and Cambridge MA.
Essential Job Functions:
Lead, develop and execute the SHE strategy for Boston sites.
Drive KPIs in line with business expectations and monitor KPIs, goals, objectives, and targets for SHE and environmental sustainability management.
Lead the implementation of the SHE Management system.
Define and agree with the SHE principles and ways of working in leased facilities.
Develop and lead a team of diverse and experienced SHE professionals to provide governance, advice, and support to the sites.
Deliver communication and training strategies to promote awareness of SHE and environmental sustainability initiatives, performance, and design amongst cross-functional organizations.
Provide knowledge and capability to obtain, maintain and assure licenses or permits to operate and adhere to local city, state, and AZ SHE policies, and procedures.
Provide local delivery of Global SHE standards and principles including sustainability and business continuity.
Lead the interface with relevant external regulatory bodies to ensure license to operate.
Lead, develop and deliver new initiatives and improvement programs in SHE and Facilities Management strategically aligned with business and functional needs.
Partner with outsourced providers on the development and maintenance of Health and Wellbeing services for the sites.
Be the 'Point of Contact' (PoC) for Global SHE for Boston sites.
Establish and maintain high quality relationships with all science customers, site and departmental leaders, existing customers and external regulatory agencies across the Boston portfolio.
Participates in global R&D SHE networks with Heads of SHE across the globe.
Ensures the team works with third-party architects and engineers in pursuit to achieve LEED Platinum certification and qualify building systems in alignment with AstraZeneca's Ambition Zero Carbon for the new Cambridge, MA building.
Ensures the team works with third-party architects and engineers in pursuit of achieving WELL V2.0 Certificate level design with the intent to obtain rating status currently.
Lead implementation efforts for environmental sustainability, including Ambition Zero Carbon strategy, into a playbook.
Ensure appropriate internal controls and measurement systems are developed and implemented to assess environmental and sustainability performance across sites.
Develop standard processes to optimize energy, water, waste use/generation and leverage these practices to meet Ambition Zero Carbon and My Green Lab principles.
Conduct annual environmental performance predictions/forecasting to develop and track annual targets as well as identify environmental sustainability projects.
Ongoing research of advancing technologies to provide recommendations for reduced environmental impact and improve sustainability by collaborating with internal and external partners to prioritize short-, medium- and long-term initiatives.
Essential requirements:
Bachelor's degree in Occupational Safety, Health, and Environment (or equivalent) qualified health and safety professional, or degree in a science, engineering or manufacturing discipline. MS, MBA, and/or CSP preferred.
At least seven years' experience in Safety, Health, Environmental Sustainability and/or Resilience.
Preferred demonstrable work experience in a pharmaceutical or biotechnology environment and in developing safe working processes.
Experience in administering and auditing core critical safety programs and hands-on experience in managing and/or auditing life science and pharmaceutical facilities.
Understanding of sustainability and environmental management practices.
Familiarity with laboratory processes and ability to communicate in depth with scientists.
An understanding and experience of leading Change Projects and delivering them to time, quality and budget.
Excellent communication skills and be comfortable supporting stakeholders at all levels.
Develops and maintains quality relationships, gains the confidence of others and works effectively in a multidisciplinary matrix environment.
Good technical and IT skills to exploit new technologies.
Prior experience in successfully building, mentoring and leading teams including the development of talent across a SHE function.
Great customer and supplier relationship management.
Be comfortable working autonomously and making decisions sometimes with limited information.
High attention to detail and accuracy with a strong commitment to business ethics.
