McCarthy Building Companies, Inc.

The Tax Manager oversees a team responsible for the indirect and income tax function. The team: (1) ensures processes provide for timely and accurate reporting, (2) looks to continuously improve and implement solutions, (3) deploys timely internal training tools, (4) provides tax consulting and research services to internal customers, and (5) oversees tax audits. The Tax Manager provides guidance on the strategic vision and direction for the tax function in a manner that balances organizational objectives and tax risks. Key Responsibilities:
  • Manages the indirect and federal/state income tax filing preparation, including sales/use tax and unclaimed property, and collection of non-wage compensation reporting for W2 inclusion.
  • Supervises indirect and income tax research/audits and the estimation of future tax obligations.
  • Serves as the primary contact for communications with the IRS and other tax authorities.
  • Manages the tax consultation services with internal operations/legal partners, with a heavy emphasis on indirect taxes for renewable energy projects.
  • Maintains strong relationships with outside vendors, looking for opportunities to outsource workload when it is beneficial to the organization.
  • Strategizes big-picture efficiencies and tax solutions both independently and in collaboration with other partners. Champion agreed upon ideas for the next phases of discussion or implementation.
  • Assures team is current on tax compliance law changes, evaluates impacts, and communicates concerns to leaders timely.
  • Reviews and approves internal tax policies, procedures, and related tools on the Management System or internal intranet site, ensuring content is current and allows users to make appropriate tax decisions.
  • Provides training, problem resolution, goal setting support, and timely employee/manager connection conversations for direct reports.
Education, experience, and skills required:
  • Bachelor's or master's degree in accounting.
  • CPA, with 7+ years of experience, with emphasis in indirect taxes and/or federal/state income taxes.
  • Familiarity with a multitude of states' indirect tax rules, ideally within the construction industry.
  • Excellent organizational, time management, and collaboration skills.
  • Engages in cross-functional teams effectively.
  • Manages multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Strong accounting, analytical, research, and oral/written communication skills.
  • Manages, motivates, trains, and champions the development of direct reports.
  • Comfortable guiding the overall tax approach for a growing organization.
