JOB SUMMARY

The position of the Surveillance Coordinator is a full-time position within the Maternal, Child, and Family Health (MCFH) Division of the Philadelphia Department of Public Health (PDPH). The Surveillance Coordinator’s primary responsibility will be to support MCFH’s citywide perinatal surveillance efforts, specifically in partnership with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Surveillance for Emerging Threats to Pregnant People and their Infants Network (SET-NET). The position requires working closely in a multidisciplinary team with other professional staff in MCFH and the Division of Disease Control (DDC). This position will focus primarily on perinatal hepatitis C virus (HCV) exposures and may expand to include other pathogens in the future.

JOB SPECIFICATIONS

Data management


  • Routinely review surveillance data to assess data quality and clean data to address issues including but not limited to duplicates, incorrect data entry, and missingness.

  • Assist with the management of the secure REDCap database by adding and removing fields to align with CDC grant requirements and ensuring skip logics are functional for data entry.

  • Import data into the REDCap database of perinatal exposures for newly identified cases.

Medical Record Requests and Abstraction


  • Request medical records for identified cases (mother-infant dyads).

  • Abstract medical records for identified cases (mother-infant dyads).

  • Conduct infant follow-up for identified infants, this will include contacting pediatric health care providers, abstracting medical data, data cleaning, and data management of abstracted infant data.

Data Analysis & Dissemination


  • Conduct literature reviews related to perinatal exposures, including but not limited to the impact of exposures during pregnancy on maternal and infant health, as well as the impact of various strains on maternal and infant health.

  • Contribute to any analyses of this surveillance data in collaboration with the DDC Viral Hepatitis  Program.

  • Contribute to development and implementation of public health education campaigns on the prevention of HCV infection and other infectious pathogens during pregnancy with PDPH and CDC.

  • Carry out special projects related to the epidemiology of HCV infection and other infectious pathogens during pregnancy including contributing data to CDC-initiated projects.

  • Disseminate any educational or communication materials to Philadelphia healthcare providers and community.

Other Tasks:


  • Present surveillance activities to and collaborate with external stakeholders and partners, such as: clinicians/healthcare providers, community members, academics, etc.

  • Establish and maintain connections with hospitals and health systems in Philadelphia, prioritizing labor and delivery hospitals.

  • Attend all relevant CDC SET-NET meetings including HCV and any other pathogen specific SET-NET meetings, PHL/CDC meetings, MCFH/DDC meetings, any meetings with other funded jurisdictions, and any additional meetings that may arise.

  • Support other MCFH surveillance, SET-NET, and perinatal surveillance activities as needed.

EDUCATION


  • Bachelor’s degree in public health, epidemiology, or equivalent from an accredited institution is required. Master’s degree preferred. High School Diploma/GED with 5-7 years of related public health experience will be accepted in lieu of a bachelor's degree.


  • Strong oral and written communication skills, both oral and written.

  • Experience and aptitude interacting with healthcare professionals and working in healthcare settings.

  • Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and the ability to organize and present information effectively.

  • Ability to work independently to comprehensively complete tasks.

  •  REDCap, or other data management experience is strongly preferred.

  • Experience with cleaning and analyzing data, using analytic software such as SAS, preferred.

  • Experience requesting and abstracting data from medical records preferred.

  • Knowledge and experience with medical terminology strongly preferred.

  • Flexibility, professionalism, and the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously are highly valued attributes.

  • Strong skills in Microsoft Office (Outlook, Excel, Word, Power Point).

WORK ENVIRONMENT:  Standard office setting at workstation and periodic use of office equipment. This position requires fulltime in-person work in accordance with City of Philadelphia policies. The office environment will primarily be at 1101 Market Street, Philadelphia, PA with alternative work necessary at clinical sites for abstraction, as necessary.

POSITION TYPE AND WORK SCHEDULE:  Full time position, typical hours are Monday through Friday 8:30 am to 5:00 pm.

TRAVEL:  Local travel to multiple sites and community meetings, upon request.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:  Transporting materials is limited to travel, if needed.
