ANNUAL ANTICIPATED HIRING RANGE: $83,000.00 - 102,000.00 (Salaries are paid biweekly)

Job Summary

The Sr. Planner, Transit plays a critical role in advancing the City's transit planning and development efforts. This position conducts system analysis, travel demand modeling, and performance evaluations to identify areas for improvement and innovation in transit services. The Planner collaborates with internal teams, external agencies, and stakeholders to develop and implement equitable, data-driven solutions that address current and long-term transit challenges. Demonstrating leadership in transit planning and team management, this role mentors staff, fosters collaboration among diverse teams, and advocates for sustainable, innovative mobility solutions that align with the City's broader objectives.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Leadership and Team Development
    • Supervise and mentor service planning staff, fostering an inclusive and high-performing team by overseeing performance evaluations, optimizing workload distribution, and supporting continuous professional growth.


  • Strategic Transit Planning and Advocacy

    • Serve as a lead contributor to large-scale transit initiatives, including rapid transit expansion, multimodal integration, and innovative mobility solutions.

    • Represent the City of Fort Collins in regional, state, and federal planning forums to advocate for local transit priorities.

    • Engage with the community, City officials, and external agencies to gather feedback, foster support for transit initiatives, and promote equitable access to transit services through strategic planning and effective implementation.



  • Collaboration and Partnerships

    • Partner with Operations management, City departments, external agencies, and stakeholders to drive sustainable transit initiatives and innovative mobility solutions.

    • Coordinate with internal City divisions, public and private sector groups, and external agencies to ensure cohesive planning and enhanced public services.



  • Data-Driven Analysis and Reporting

    • Analyze transit systems and performance to develop data-driven recommendations that address current and long-term service challenges while optimizing transit operations.

    • Conduct travel demand modeling to forecast ridership and inform service planning.

    • Oversee the collection, analysis, and interpretation of economic, social, and physical data impacting transportation planning.

    • Produce high-quality visual and narrative reports, maps, and presentations for diverse stakeholders, ensuring data-driven decision-making.



  • Development and Infrastructure Planning
    • Review development applications and provide recommendations on transit, bicycle, pedestrian, and roadway facilities to support citywide objectives.

Required Qualifications

MinimumPreferredCollege degree or equivalent work experience. Some positions may require functionally related certification or advanced degrees Bachelor's degree in Urban, Regional, or Transportation Planning; Civil Engineering; Geography; or a related field.

Experience Requirements

  • Minimum of five years of experience in transit or transportation planning, including at least two years in a leadership or supervisory role.
