Howmet Fastening Systems is looking for a Quality Tech II, NDT in our Torrance, CA location. HFS is a business unit of Howmet Aerospace, headquartered in Torrance, California. We hold the number one global position in aerospace fastening systems, and we're the North American leader in commercial transportation fasteners. Our high-tech, multi-material fastening systems are found nose to tail on aircraft and aerospace engines. Our products are also critical components of industrial gas turbines, automobiles, commercial transportation vehicles, and construction and industrial equipment.

General Summary:

This position is a split/swing shift.

Under minimal supervision, inspects precision metal fasteners and raw material samples for indications of discontinuities in machining and/or material by applying an oxide suspension and fluorescent penetrant and magnetic particle inspection solutions to fasteners and samples and examines them under black light. Tests inspection equipment and materials to maintain quality control of inspection process. Sets-up and calibrates NDT equipment. Must achieve level II company issued certification.

Specific Responsibilities:


  • Operates all NDT equipment in accordance with applicable company, government and customer specifications and specific division written procedures.

  • Disposes of all rejected material/parts per the prescribed procedures.

  • Sets up and calibrates equipment.

  • Reads and interprets indications and evaluates them with reference to applicable standards and specifications.

  • Sends defective parts to the laboratory for further investigation.

  • Organizes and reports test results.

  • Assist in training new employees in this position.

  • Must pass multiple examinations for certification every 5 years.

  • Performs other tasks of equal or lesser skill as required.


Knowledge and Skills:

  • Knowledge of Fluorescent Penetrant (FPI) and Magnetic Particle (MPI) methods

  • Knowledge of most lab tests

  • Fastener manufacturing and inspection experience preferred

  • Familiar with customer requirements, testing and equipment functions

  • Can interface with auditors and customer representatives

  • Can assist with audit preparations if required
