Duties & Responsibilities:

The R&D Pigment Technology Lead will serve as the technical lead for VIAVI’s Security and Custom Collor Solution pigment products including ChromaFlair, SpectraFlair, Optically Variable Pigment (OVP), Optically Variable Magnetic Pigment (OVMP), and Charms that enable overt authentication to protect banknotes and other documents of value against counterfeiting.  Central to this role is translating customer needs into new product, process and technology development activities to drive growth in Viavi’s Pigment business.  This position reports to VIAVI OSP’s Vice President of Research and Development. 

Responsibilities:


  • Develop and maintain a multi-year R&D strategy aligned with the commercial team’s roadmap   

  • Function as the lead technical partner with key customers to ensure requirements are translated into actionable technology and product/process development plans

  • Drive intellectual property development in Roll Coating products and technology by working across functions within the R&D team, Operations, and the pigment Product Line Manager. 

  • Technical partner with PLM to explore and develop new concepts to leverage existing capabilities and to understand what new capabilities to develop to enable future growth

  • Driver of future innovation for overt security feature development

  • Travel 10% for in-person meetings with customers

  • Position reports out of Santa Rosa

    Pre-Requisites / Skills / Experience Requirements:

    Background/Experience:


    • Greater than 10 years’ experience in Thin Film Applications and/or Material Science aspects of Thin Films

    • Solid fundamental understanding of Vacuum based coating equipment.  Experience in roll coating a positive.

    • Working knowledge of Chemistry based processes

    • Background in optical application of Thin Films

    • Beneficial to have a working knowledge of ink and paint systems which deploy thin film flakes as part of their intended use

    • Preferred: Graduate Degree in Material Science, Physics, Electrical Engineering or related field

    • Able to lead people and engage in Risk/Reward Decision with corresponding Business Teams

    • ITAR Required (US Person as defined by USCIS)
