Job Description

The Charles V. Schaefer, Jr. School of Engineering and Science (SES) at Stevens Institute of Technology (Stevens) invites applications for an Adjunct Instructor position for the fall semester of 2025 (September–December).

The Adjunct will teach ENGR 211, Statics and Introduction to Engineering Mechanics. Each section of this course meets three times a week—a 2-hour lab component and two 75-minute lecture sections—for the full semester. An additional ~2 hours of course grading and logistical work is expected each week, for a total of approximately 5–6 hours per week.

As a key component of the Stevens Design Spine, a series of courses that continue through an Engineering student’s senior year, ENGR 211 is fundamental to the Charles V. Schaefer, Jr. School of Engineering and Science’s commitment to instilling in its Engineering graduates a sense of engineering mastery, interdisciplinarity, project management, teamwork, and specific engineering skills required of the modern engineer. It also underscores their ability to communicate the technical aspects of a project properly and clearly.

ENGR 211 is a project-based class with heavy emphasis on various engineering disciplines, such as CAD, data analysis, and structural design using fundamental concepts in statics and mechanics of materials. This course is mandatory for all Engineering majors at Stevens and culminates in a SolidWorks-based design challenge. An excellent candidate is passionate about engineering education and interested in sharing that passion with others. A stellar applicant has received a degree in and has work experience in engineering, though these are not requirements.

The Adjunct will teach course material at the direction of a full-time faculty course coordinator, in conjunction with other course section instructors and with support from TAs. They are expected to work on-campus with students, with certain tasks such as grading student work and providing feedback on student projects extending throughout the week.

Registration trends may affect a final hiring decision. This is a fixed-term, on-campus assignment for the Fall 2025 semester at Stevens Institute of Technology. Engagement in subsequent academic terms will be considered on a case-by-case, as-needed basis.

Responsibilities:

  • Coordinate coursework and curriculum with the ENGR 211 course coordinator

  • Meet in-person with assigned class section(s) weekly – once in lab and twice in lecture – to effectively cover all syllabus material

  • Facilitate course instruction and evaluate student performance

  • Foster an open, inclusive class atmosphere
