Executive Summary


The Ohio State University seeks an accomplished, dynamic, and strategic IT executive to serve as its next Vice President and Chief Information Officer (VP/CIO). This is a tremendous opportunity to join a vibrant and progressive university located in one of the fastest growing cities in the U.S. The VP/CIO will report to the Senior Vice President of Administration and Planning and is the senior-most executive leading IT across a large, Research 1 university with over 66,000 students.



On the Columbus campus, this year's new first year class is the largest in Ohio State's 154-year history. As a strategic leader, the VP/CIO will oversee a forward thinking, enterprise focused IT organization that champions the progressive use of technology to further the mission of The Ohio State University. To this end, the VP/CIO must be customer-centric with a strong focus on driving efficiency and innovation.



The VP/CIO will lead in continually improving the capabilities of the IT enterprise by implementing the appropriate technologies to assure that The Ohio State University effectively meets its objectives in education, research and community outreach. The VP/CIO will collaborate and partner with senior leaders, faculty, peers and institutional staff to optimally align IT with the goals and strategic direction of The Ohio State University. In addition to the central IT priorities, the VP/CIO will collaborate closely with distributed IT groups to enable consensus and better coordination of shared services and support. Establishing a strong partnership with the Chief Information Officer of The Ohio State Wexner Medical Center is essential.



The VP/CIO will have a central role in the success of several key strategic initiatives including advancing the research computing environment and providing IT resources in support of campus expansion. The VP/CIO will provide the strategic and operational leadership needed to oversee the continued digital transformation that will bring value, address equity and improve the user experience overall for students, faculty and administrators. They will lead the university with respect to emerging trends and challenges research computing, cybersecurity and artificial intelligence/machine learning. The VP/CIO will support the optimization of those systems and the process and cultural transformation to leverage the systems effectively.



The successful candidate will be a highly experienced IT professional who will bring strong leadership and a demonstrated track record in strategic planning and executing in complex institutions. The VP/CIO will be a collaborative partner who is service oriented and can build trust, credibility and consensus with constituents across the campus. They will be committed to building a diverse team to serve the university, as well as formulating strategies to address offering technology to a diverse workforce and student body and helping to bridge the digital divide between university stakeholders and the community. About the Office of Technology and Digital Innovation (OTDI)


The Office of Technology and Digital Innovation (OTDI) works in partnership with organizations across the university delivering technology resources to support our faculty, students and staff across all Ohio State campuses.



The departments in our organization work together to provide technology resources and education to the Ohio State community.



OTDI also partners with the Ohio State Online (OSO) team in the Office of Academic Affairs (OAA), who provides expertise in learning technology, digital skills, online and hybrid education and student services for post-traditional learners.

Position Summary


The Ohio State University's technology model includes both centralized services and a diverse, distributed technology ecosystem. The VP/CIO is the senior executive responsible for the strategic oversight, alignment, and delivery of centralized information technology services across the university (including regional campuses and services in all 88 Ohio counties) while also coordinating with distributed IT leaders and initiatives.



Overseeing the Office of Technology and Digital Innovation, the VP/CIO leads an organization of approximately 500 team members, driving innovation, operational excellence, and a customer-centric IT culture. The role includes developing IT strategy, policy, standards, and governance while fostering partnerships with internal stakeholders and external entities to advance OSU's mission.




Reporting Relationships


Reporting to the Senior Vice President of Administration and Planning, with close working relationships to both the Provost and Executive Vice President of Research, the VP/CIO ensures IT resources effectively support the university's academic, research, and administrative priorities.

Key Responsibilities




Strategy



  • Develop and implement IT strategies that align with institutional goals and drive innovation.

  • Oversee and continuously improve centralized IT services, while fostering a unified, transparent and collaborative IT environment with distributed IT teams.

  • Partner with the Wexner Medical Center CIO and health leaders to ensure IT alignment and synergy.

  • Implement governance frameworks to ensure creativity, accountability, and performance.





Leadership



  • Build strong, collaborative relationships with university and external leaders to deliver transformative IT solutions.

  • Lead a high-performing, inclusive IT organization that supports academic, research, and administrative excellence.

  • Provide the leadership connection for the Ohio Technology Consortium (OH-TECH) with OSU, acting as its fiscal and legal agent, to support OH-TECH's mission of delivering world-class technologies, information and expertise to provide Ohioans with a strong foundation for education and workforce, scientific research and business innovation.

  • Support faculty and researcher needs through robust computing strategies and innovative technologies.

  • Oversee vendor relationships and contracts to maximize value and service reliability.





Budget Management and Efficiency



  • Ensure responsible financial oversight of the IT operating budget, aligning with institutional priorities.

  • Strategically allocate resources to enhance efficiency, effectiveness, and cost management.

  • Leverage OSU's scale to identify cost savings and improve IT service quality.

  • Foster a culture of continuous improvement within the IT organization.

  • Build a team committed to excellence, collaboration, and delivering exceptional service.




Goals and Objectives


The following goals and objectives have been identified as priorities for this position:



  • Develop strong, collaborative, trusting relationships with constituents including administrators, faculty, board of trustees, regional campus leaders, medical center executives and other key stakeholders across the University. Partner with leaders and staff on IT initiatives in support of education, research and administration. This includes strong collaborations with distributed IT resources from across schools and colleges.

  • Prioritize and ensure the training and use of artificial intelligence/machine learning leverages the enterprise system across university.

  • Develop, gain approval for, and continue the implementation of a digital strategy that improves the user experience for students, faculty, staff and administration.

  • Provide leadership and strategy to support digital equity across the institution to help close the digital divide among student populations and, ultimately, improve outcomes and access.

  • Support University initiatives to enhance and expand distance education, offering more online educational opportunities that meet the ever-changing needs of students and faculty.

  • Optimize the IT governance including the IT Partnership Council to include broad representation across the campus and enable effective prioritization of new technology investments and initiatives while assessing risks. This includes building consensus working with distributed IT on technology initiatives and managed services agreements.

  • Partner with the research enterprise to conduct an assessment and develop the strategy to advance the research computing environment that provides access to data and computing resources to support researchers across the University.




Candidate Qualifications




Education



  • A bachelor's degree in Information Technology, Computer Science or closely related field is required. A graduate degree is preferred.





Knowledge and Work Experience



  • 10+ years of senior level IT leadership experience, such as a CIO or Deputy CIO. While experience in a comprehensive university is an advantage, candidates from non-academic sectors are welcome but should have experience in strategic planning, complex organizational structures, project planning, budgeting and management, and process transformation.

  • Expertise across IT domains, including academic/research computing, infrastructure, and administrative systems.

  • Proven ability to align IT strategies with institutional priorities in dynamic, multi-faceted environments.

  • Strong commitment to fostering a positive work environment and in workforce development and mentoring.

  • Visionary leader with strategic foresight and the ability to anticipate future challenges.

  • Collaborative, transparent, and approachable, fostering trust and alignment across stakeholders.
