Chief Objective of Position:

Christopher Newport University invites applications for one or more positions of Assistant Director of Residence Life.


The Assistant Directors are responsible for the overall coordination and administration of multiple residence halls and supervision of residence life staff at Christopher Newport University. The Assistant Directors seek to provide a safe and secure living and learning community that complements the educational mission of the University and contributes to individual and interpersonal growth and development. As part of the Central Office staff, the Assistant Director position includes responsibilities of student care and support, conflict resolution, programming, fostering community and leadership development, crisis intervention, facilities management, and assisting with the administration of student conduct. Additionally, the Assistant Directors are responsible for supervising live-in, full-time professional staff members (Residential Fellows), oversight of front desk operations, and overall management of the Resident Assistants (RAs).
This position is designated as a "responsible employee" who has the authority to redress sexual violence, who has the duty to report incidents of sexual violence or other student misconduct, or who a student could reasonably believe has this authority or duty.
This position is a full-time, 12-month position with on-call requirements (rotation) that include nights, weekends, breaks, and holidays. The position is live-off, therefore, requires staff to live within a 15 minute response time from campus with reliable transportation.

Work Tasks:


Staff Supervision and Development


  • Recruits, hires, trains, and supervises multiple full-time, live-in professional staff members, who directly supervise a residential community; provides on-going training and support.

  • Assist in the recruitment, hiring, training, and supervision of student staff, composed of over 100 Resident Assistants and Front Desk Assistants.



Residential Experience and Engagement

  • Provide leadership in the implementation of the residential curriculum and community development expectations for the residential area(s) they oversee; to include training Resident Assistants on implementation strategies and providing data regularly.

  • Collaborate regularly with other offices such as Orientation and Student Involvement, Center for Honor Enrichment and Community Standards (conduct), Counseling Services, Accessibility and Care Team Support, and Center for Student Success to support student retention and overall success.


Conduct, Care, and Crisis Response

  • Serves in an on-call role rotation as part of an emergency response team, providing guidance over the phone to help staff respond to concerns.

  • Required to report to campus for certain crisis response measures as determined by the Director. On-call includes after-hours and weekends; with flexible work day hours as determined by the Director.

  • Serves as a hearing officer for some low-level student conduct violations in consultation with the Center for Honor Enrichment and Community Standards.

  • Provides guidance to professional and student staff with regard to protocol in escalating issues/incidents associated with Title IX and Clery Act compliance.


Partnerships and Collaboration

  • Works collaboratively with the Associate and Assistant Directors coordinating specific department-wide committees, task forces, and programs as needed.

  • Provides support in collaboration with the rest of the Central Office team in one or more functional areas that support the mission of Residence Life to include: advising the Residence Hall Association (RHA); student and professional staff development; benchmarking and assessment efforts; communication and on-line presence for Residence Life; and recommending policies and procedures that enhance the residential experience.

  • Assist and provide support for university wide programs to include, but not limited to: Orientation, Commencement, Move-In, and Admission events.


Operations and Administration

  • Supports the front desk operations for residence hall buildings, assisting with recruitment, selection and training of student staff.

  • Opens and closes the residence halls at the start and end of each contract period; oversees the system of inspection and the assessment of damages in their area of oversight.

  • In collaboration with other Assistant Directors, supports summer housing operations for summer school students.

  • Follows workplace safety regulations and adheres to applicable standards, processes, and programs established for your position.

  • Immediately report unsafe work conditions and work-related incidents to your supervisor and participate in accident investigation requests.

  • Promote a safe and healthy work environment by ensuring the implementation of safety regulations and applicable standards, processes, and programs established for employees under your supervision.

  • Ensures employees under your supervision are trained in safety standards and procedures for their positions.

  • Report work-related incidents within 24 hours according to the procedures established by the university, state and federal guidelines.

  • This position is designated as a "responsible employee" who has the authority to redress sexual violence, who has the duty to report incidents of sexual violence or other student misconduct, or who a student could reasonably believe has this authority or duty.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Required Education:

Master's degree or a Bachelor's degree with relevant experience that equates to an advanced degree.


Additional Consideration - Education:

Master's degree in Higher Education Administration, Student Personnel or related field, at time of start date.

  • Previous experience working in a university setting

  • Experience working with students

  • Previous post-graduate experience in residence life

Salary Information:

Starting at $56,800, commensurate with education and experience.
