Job-Specific Responsibilities:

The Office of BGLTQ Student Life (the "QuOffice") serves as a central resource for bisexual, gay, lesbian, transgender, queer, and questioning (BGLTQ) students at Harvard College. We strive to create a community where BGLTQ students can thrive and where all students are well-equipped to engage knowledgeably and compassionately with regard to gender and sexuality. The primary responsibilities include supervising 10-12 undergraduate student workers (hire, orient, train, oversee and assist with coordination of events), triaging student requests, developing, implementing and assessing QuOffice programming and QuOffice-supported events pertaining to queer issues, facilitating special projects to promote the growth and development of queer students, and producing and editing QuOffice communications and publicity materials. The Assistant Director is responsible for a variety of administrative and event-related projects for the office.

Student Worker Supervision and Mentoring

Oversee hiring, training, and ongoing performance management of student workers.

In consultation with the Director, develop learning goals and leadership development outcomes for the student worker program.

Supervise programs and projects of the student worker team.

Provide guidance and assist in coordination of student-led initiatives, including but not limited to community gatherings, events and programs, flyers and other publicity, and educational workshops.

Work with the Department Administrator to create and maintain personnel files, determine work schedules, and approve time.

Program Development

Identify, develop, and coordinate social, cultural, and educational events that will serve to enhance awareness of BGLTQ issues and identities on campus.

Manage program collaborations with partner offices across campus, including but not limited to the Office of Gender Equity, the Mignone Center for Career Services, the Harvard Chaplains, the Disability Access Office, the Office for the Arts, Harvard Athletics, Harvard Recreation, Residential Life, Student Engagement, and the Admissions Office.

Create assessment and evaluation tools for signature programs, events, and initiatives.

Monitor operating budget for signature programs, events, and initiatives, ensuring that the use of funds is consistent with project goals and regulations.

Student Advising

Oversee the Queer Advisory Council, a collaborative board of student leaders from BGLTQ- focused student organizations and at-large student members with a demonstrated interest in supporting queer and trans issues.

Advise student organizations planning programs and events related to BGLTQ issues and provide logistical support as needed.

Serve as a resource and provide information and referrals to students regarding issues of identity, community, and belonging.

Serve as a confidential resource, for the purposes of Title IX, to students who disclose an incident of sexual or gender-based harassment.

Communications and Publicity

Oversee online communications and marketing, including the BGLTQ Office's website, email, weekly newsletter, and various social media channels (Such as Facebook and Instagram).

Update brochures and flyers and assist in producing the annual report.

Other Responsibilities

Represent the BGLTQ Office at relevant campus and community events as needed.

Handle additional items as determined by the BGLTQ Office Director.

Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent work experience required
  • Minimum of 3 years' relevant work experience


Additional Qualifications and Skills

  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite
  • Master's degree in related field preferred (e.g., higher education administration, student affairs)
  • At least one year's experience managing college-age student workers
  • Enhanced intercultural competence, strong communication and interpersonal skills, both written and verbal
  • Experience with student activities, managing programming/events, and assessment
  • Passion and understanding of diversity with focus on queer issues
  • Ability to forge collaborative professional relationships with diverse constituencies including students, staff, and faculty
  • Proficient in social media platforms, including but not limited to Facebook and Instagram
  • Ability to work independently and effectively on multiple tasks with minimal supervision
  • Available to work occasional nights and weekends, especially during orientation

The Assistant Director will collaborate with staff at the Harvard College Women's Center, and the Harvard Foundation for Intercultural and Race Relations to coordinate undergraduate student worker training, plan department-wide programs and events, and create initiatives that acknowledge the intersecting identities of our students while enhancing the College's commitment to belonging and inclusion.
