We have an exciting new opportunity within CVRM Biometrics as Director Advanced Analytics in our Cardiovascular, Renal and Metabolism (CVRM) therapy area. We are looking for a talented and highly motivated candidate who can understand complex business questions; formulate solutions using advanced analytics and AI; and communicate the results to the business to drive scientific breakthroughs. This role will be based at AstraZeneca's R&D site in Boston, US, and reports to Head of Data Science, Late Development, CVRM. Accountabilities



As Director of Advanced Analytics, you will develop innovative analytics, visualizations and advanced statistical and machine learning models to generate data-driven disease understanding and streamlined drug development. As the first team member in the US, you will establish the data science skill locally, identify new opportunities for application of analytics and data science that deliver value to patients and AstraZeneca, and contribute to the DS strategy within the CVRM Therapeutic Area. Responsibilities include:


  • Inform innovative strategic data science initiatives across Biometrics and Late CVRM


  • Use your leadership skills and entrepreneurial spirit to explore new insights and deliver effective solutions in collaboration with internal groups and/or external partners


  • Develop analytics and software solutions with applicability both internally and externally


  • Establish and maintain effective collaboration with other internal Data Science organizations and external vendors and/or academic partners


  • Provide senior collaborators and functional leadership teams with specific expertise and advice regarding the best approaches to apply data science and related methodologies


  • Maintain a broad awareness of the evolving external environment and make recommendations on outside technologies/approaches for AstraZeneca to pursue


  • Represent skill/function internally and externally at conferences, seminars, and meetings







Essential Skills/Experience



  • PhD + 2 years of experience OR MSc + 5 years of experience in Mathematics, Computer Science, Engineering, Physics, Statistics, or a related quantitative field


  • Strong background in statistics (especially survival analysis and Bayesian statistics)


  • Experience with designing clinical trials (sample size/power calculations, multiple testing procedures, simulations for complex clinical trial designs, etc.)


  • Broad experience in machine learning methodology


  • Significant in-depth experience in analyzing data, drawing conclusions and presenting in a succinct fashion to senior stakeholders, along with recommended actions


  • Strong technical background in R and Python (experience with writing C++ extensions is a plus)


  • Proven experience in leading and managing colleagues


  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills



Desirable Skills/Experience



  • PhD in Mathematics, Computer Science, Engineering, Physics, Statistics, or a related quantitative field


  • Experience in clinical development


  • Experience of working in a complex global organization
