ASRT, Inc. provides scientific, information management, management consulting, bioinformatics, and administrative program support to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and other Federal and private sector clients. The successful candidate will be a full-time employee of ASRT, Inc., and will be assigned to the Division of Viral Diseases (DVD), National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases (NCIRD), CDC located at 4770 Buford Highway, Chamblee, GA, to provide services to fulfill the mission of the Viral Vaccine Preventable Diseases Branch (VVPDB).


SCOPE OF WORK

The Data Manager will provide support for the analysis, management and collection of various forms of qualitative and quantitative data. This includes, but is not limited to, the advanced use of statistical analysis techniques for the modeling, cohort analysis and forecasting of data and the quality control of provided data.


MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Develop tools and analytical pipelines for analyses and management of next-generation sequencing and other biological datasets.
  • Develop quality control and reporting tools for the analyses and management of next-generation sequencing studies.
  • Develop sequence analysis tools using common bioinformatics frameworks or languages (R, Python, Perl, Linux).
  • Use high-performance computational environments (Linux, cluster, distributed databasing, cloud).
  • Interact productively with databasing technologies and perform database administration tasks (Access, SQL Server, Azure, AWS, Hadoop).
  • Advise on scientifically sound analysis methods of biological dataset analyses.
  • Perform genetic analyses, to include phylogenetics and comparative genomics.
  • Contribute to the ongoing research and development of sequencing methods in the laboratory.
  • Contribute to the development of fieldable/sharable informatics tools and methods.
  • Produce robust visualizations of laboratory datasets (Tableau, RShiny, PowerBI).
  • Participate in the daily work of the branch, to include meetings, reporting, and required training.
  • Maintain code repositories using version control tools (GitLab/GitHub).
  • Prepare integrations of laboratory data with epidemiologic data as needed.
  • Contribute to scientific reports, publications, presentations and manuscripts as needed by the branch.
  • Evaluate and recommend informatics tools for non-expert users.
  • Train and provide training documentation on informatics methods to non-expert users.
Requirements:

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS


Education and Experience:

  • Master's Degree, or other advanced degree, in public health, epidemiology, computer science, biostatistics, biological sciences or a field related to the requirements of the position.

Required:

  • Experience with the handling, analyses and quality control of laboratory sequence data, in particular next-generation sequencing systems such as Illumina and Oxford Nanopore.
  • Experience with any major bioinformatic pipelining or reproducibility framework.
  • Experience with code versioning tools (Gitlab, Github).
  • Experience with high-performance computational environments (Linux, cluster computing, bash/shell scripting).
  • Has production-level experience with major languages and constituent libraries commonly used in bioinformatics (R, Python).
  • Has developed bioinformatics tools, training, and documentation for non-expert users.
  • Experience with visualization, business intelligence or automated reporting frameworks (Tableau, RShiny, PowerBI).

Desirable:

  • Experience with database administration.
  • Has experience with the use containerization frameworks and the deployment of containerized applications.
  • Experience with Linux system administration.
  • Experience with distributed databasing (Impala, Spark, Hadoop).
  • Experience with cloud frameworks (AWS, Azure).

Language Skills:

  • The candidate must possess excellent oral and written communication skills in English.
