The Police Commander is responsible for the operation of an assigned section of the department, including direct supervision of lieutenants, sergeants, and officers, supporting personnel, department facilities and equipment, and performs special enforcement operations, planning and implementation.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:


  • Responsible for providing input and managing an assigned sector, overseeing sworn staff, developing strategic goals and objectives for the assigned division, and serving on boards and committees both internal and external to the District.

  • Implements and monitors section programs, staffing, training, policies, procedures, and practices used to enforce the laws and ordinances of the City and State of Colorado

  • Directs and conducts internal and administrative investigations at the direction of the Deputy Police Chief and makes recommendations consistent with policies and procedures

  • Develops the department’s infrastructure system for managing new equipment, replacement of equipment and implementation of new equipment and/or programs and future needs and replacement of equipment

  • Reviews and manages section staffing levels to maintain efficient operations

  • Assist in the annual budget process by preparing analysis and financial reports/records, capital expenditure reports and provides information and input on division needs

  • Manages expenditures to ensure section is staying within scope of allotted budget

  • Conducts inspections of police department facilities and takes appropriate measures to rectify any problems noted

  • Recognizes, interprets and applies policies, procedures, and plans; implements and evaluates effectiveness of personnel and operating procedures

  • Provides community education and solutions to community issues

  • Reviews and evaluates department policy, technology, projects, and community policing program to promote efficiency and effectiveness

  • Investigates complaints and identifies sensitive issues; brings appropriate issues to the immediate attention of the Deputy Chief and/or Police Chief and works for a solution

  • Mediates and addresses employee and community issues

  • Schedules daily activities and establishes short- and long-term priorities on order to meet established goals, mission and vision of the department and City

  • Under general direction, supervises, plans and coordinates the activities and operations of law enforcement staff within assigned unit of the Police Department; serves as watch commander on assigned shift; and provides highly responsible and complex staff assistance to the Deputy Police Chief.

  • Required to develop and tailor a strategic plan/crime plan for a particular sector/division.


  • May be required to work in office on admin duties.

  • May be required to be the human resources liaison for the recruiting, hiring and background investigations for new hires

  • Prepares correspondence and reports, and performs administrative tasks in support of assigned area

  • Manages and participates in the development and implementation of goals, objectives, policies, and priorities for assigned watch or division

  • Recommends appropriate service and staffing levels

  • Familiar with NIMS standards and assumes overall command of major incidents

  • May perform the duties of Deputy Chief of Police in his/her absence, as directed.

QUALIFICATIONS:  


  • A bachelor’s degree in business, public administration, management, criminal justice, or related field preferred.

  • Minimum of 10 years of law enforcement and patrol experience

  • Minimum of 5 years as a supervisor for a law enforcement agency; total law enforcement experience may substitute for this requirement

  • Current or ability to obtain a licensure and certification through Colorado P.O.S.T. (Peace Officer Standards and Training).


  • Proficient in all aspects of the investigations process.

  • Proficiency with the criminal justice system; includes federal, state, and local law enforcement regulations.

  • Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite.

  • Ability to communicate effectively, orally, and in writing.

  • Ability to use sound judgment.

  • Ability to manage time and workload effectively which includes planning, organizing, and prioritizing with attention to details.

  • Ability to work a flexible schedule including afternoon and overnight shifts, weekends, and holidays.

  • Must have a valid driver’s license from the State of Colorado (or for out of state law enforcement officers, obtain a CO driver’s license prior within 1 month of hire)

  • Or an equivalent combination of education, experience, knowledge, skills, abilities.

Pay Range:

$107,305.00 - $151,567.75 Annual
