ABS Government Engineering Services (GES) is looking for a Structural Analysis Engineer to assist with structural reviews and advanced analysis. This person will perform engineering design review and analysis assignments normally involving a major project or several smaller US Government projects. These projects by nature of their complexity and difficulty require the fully competent application of conventional knowledge in structural analysis as well as finite element analysis. Many assignments will also require seakeeping and structural dynamic analysis using the ABS DLA/SFA software. Project work and assignments may be broad in nature requiring ingenuity and cross functional coordination.
What You Will Do:
Perform classical hand stress analysis, finite element stress analysis, and fatigue analysis.
Be proficient in the use of finite element modeling techniques using primarily FEMAP for finite element model development and NASTRAN finite element solution.
Perform Structural Non-linear finite element analysis when required.
Perform Seakeeping Analysis and Structural Dynamic Analysis using ABS DLA/SFA software.
Devises new approaches to problems encountered and makes recommendations for changes in methods, procedures, or design where necessary.
Applies intensive and diversified knowledge of engineering principles and practices in broad areas of technical responsibility. Performs engineering reviews and analyses when necessary. Reviews other engineers' work and provides appropriate guidance and training when necessary.
Attends and lead bi-weekly meetings and quarterly workshops with internal and external clients when required
Prepares written responses to clients in accordance with established procedures.
Maintains liaison with other engineering specialists internally and externally.
Implement and maintains the ABS Health, Safety, Quality & Environmental Management Systems within assigned area of responsibility.
What You Will Need:
Education and Experience
B.S. degree in Civil, Structural Engineering, Naval Architecture, Ocean Engineering, or other related disciplines; an M.S. is preferred
Graduate from University and a minimum of five (5) years of related experience.
Demonstrated computer literacy in engineering software
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Should have advanced practical industry-related experience.
Special skills or expertise in FEMAP, NASTRAN or ANSYS. Candidate should be comfortable performing static analysis on portions of a ship structure, i.e. crane foundation.
Candidate will be expected to become proficient with in-house tools written in a variety of programming languages.
Proficient in MS Office (Word, PowerPoint, Excel)
Familiarity with Navy ships and terminology
Knowledge of applicable Rules and Regulations and the impact of Rule applications and interpretations.
Ability to identify, analyze and solve complex or unique engineering problems.
Ability to undertake short- and long-term planning to provide for efficient and effective scheduling of work assignments.
Ability to communicate effectively in English verbally and in writing.
Ability to obtain a working knowledge of the ABS Health, Safety, Quality, and Environmental Management Systems.
Experience in hydrodynamics, computational fluid dynamics (CFD), model testing and seakeeping analysis is preferred.
It Would Be Nice If You Had
Professional or chartered engineer license
Knowledgeable with programming, including Visual Basic, FORTRAN, and Python.
Familiarity with Navy ships and terminology
Reporting Relationships:
The incumbent Generally reports to a Principal Engineer but may report to others depending on the specific of assignment. This position does not have any direct reports.
