Job Description Summary


The Senior Major Gifts Officer/Major Gifts Officer identifies, cultivates, solicits, and stewards individual and institutional prospects for the School of Nursing. The Senior Major Gifts Officer/Major Gifts Officer plans, coordinates, and implements development efforts and works closely with many faculty and staff across the school. The Senior Major Gifts Officer/Major Gifts Officer plays an integral role in a wide spectrum of fundraising responsibilities, including communication efforts, events, and volunteer/board management.




Job Description





Job Responsibilities



  • Develop an understanding of the educational, research, innovation, and financial needs and goals of Penn Nursing. Speak passionately and authentically about the history, achievements, and strategic direction of the School, and have the ability to articulate that vision effectively to a diverse audience.

  • Successfully grow and manage a major gift portfolio of 100+ donor prospects to meet philanthropic goals. Focus on donor activity management, working collaboratively with faculty and development colleagues to engage donors toward major and leadership gifts.

  • Interact effectively with a broad range of constituents and provide strong support for all involved in the giving process, inspiring others to take action and ensuring a rewarding gift experience.

  • Serve as the lead liaison for Gift Planning and Corporate, Foundation Relations for the School of Nursing.

  • Emphasize cultivation and solicitation strategies that focus on donor-centered philanthropy to maximize potential gifts. Coordinate the participation of faculty, administration, trustees/volunteers, and other members of the development staff in achieving unit goals.

  • Direct and prepare major prospect proposals, and cultivation and solicitation materials, for both individual and organizational prospects.

  • Plan, coordinate, and direct visits and special events for donor prospects and donors. Oversee stewardship activities with assigned prospects.

  • Report regularly to Vice Dean of Development and interact frequently with other colleagues on all fundraising activity through active implementation of the major gifts tracking / reporting / moves management system.

  • Collaborate with University of Pennsylvania leadership and development colleagues on all matters regarding assigned prospects.

Qualifications



  • Bachelor's degree and 3-5 years (Major Gifts Officer Job Profile) or 5-7 (Senior Major Gifts Officer Job Profile) of professional higher education development-related experience or related work experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience required.

  • Entrepreneurial and strategic fundraiser with a proven track record of successful major gift fundraising.

  • Commitment to embrace the School's Guiding Principles: Embrace Diversity & Inclusion; Treat others with respect; Act with empathy; Dialogue to learn and Strive for excellence.

  • Preferred familiarity with Penn and its mission OR Nursing / healthcare.


  • Proven ability to develop and foster trust-based relationships with people at all levels internally and externally, and to collaborate and influence at a high level through effective communication and impeccable follow through.

  • Evidence of self-motivation and the ability to work both independently and in teams, with high personal standards representative of Penn's commitment to excellence.

  • Strong strategic planning and project management skills necessary to set and monitor progress against goals, to develop plans and timelines, and to measure success toward goals.

  • Discretion, good judgment, and commitment to keep confidential all data related to Penn and its alumni and donors.

  • Flexibility and resilience

  • Exceptional written, oral, and interpersonal communication skills. This position will require the willingness and ability to frequently travel domestically; and to be able to work some weekends and evenings.

  • Ability to take information from many sources and distill it to core messages that are communicated strategically and effectively to different audiences. Adaptive to rapidly changing environments.

Salary offers are made based on the candidate's qualifications, experience, skills, and education as they directly relate to the requirements of the position, as well as internal and market factors and grade profile.
