Job Description Summary
The Palliative and Advanced Illness Research Center is seeking an Associate Director of Clinical Research Data Technology. The Associate Director of Clinical Research Data Technology is responsible for the execution of data management and database development activities for all PAIR Center clinical research including large multi-site RCTs, observational cohort studies, and comparative effectiveness trials. The Associate Director of Clinical Research Data Technology will ensure PAIR Center clinical research data are high-quality, scientifically sound, and reliable for use in all analyses, publications, and reporting.
Job Description
He or she will collaborate and meet frequently with internal and external stakeholders including faculty investigators, health system leadership, and clinical research staff to understand data needs of research studies. He or she will identify optimal data sources, develop and implement clear plans for data workflows, train research staff on data collection and management systems, monitor data for unexpected events, perform data quality checks, and process data from multiple sources to generate analytic data sets.
He or she will supervise a team of data managers, scientists, and analysts called the PAIR Center Data Core. They will be responsible for assigning Data Core staff to projects and assessing progress towards goals. He or she will maintain and communicate a prioritization plan for PAIR Center Data Core activities to ensure successful and timely completion of clinical research projects.
The Associate Director of Clinical Research Data Technology will oversee the PAIR Center's implementation of the Penn Medicine's Honest Broker Program. He or she will develop protocols and best practices for querying and working with electronic health record data. He or she will ensure honest brokers are compliant with IRB, University, and Health System policies and standards. The Associate Director of Clinical Research Data Technology will also resolve operational data management challenges regarding data use agreements and data transfer, preservation, destruction, and maintain complete documentation for these processes.
Qualifications
Bachelor of Science, Bachelor of Arts, and 7 to 10 years of experience or Masters of Science, Masters of Arts, and 5 to 7 or equivalent combination of education and experience is required.
The Associate Director for Clinical Research Data Technology must demonstrate a strong understanding of research concepts and data structures within a healthcare system. He or she should be able to discuss both technical requirements and study design considerations effectively with collaborators internal and external to the PAIR Center. The successful candidate must have experience with supervision of staff and experience working with electronic health record data, and experience transforming and exploring data files using data processing software such as R (preferred), Python, or Stata. Above all, attention to detail and the ability to clearly and concisely convey nuanced technical information to different audiences (project managers, investigators, technical and non-technical external stakeholders, statisticians/analysts, other data managers) will be essential to this individual's success in the position.
