The Manager of Spiritual Health has responsibility for creating, directing, and supporting the delivery of a complete program of Spiritual Health at a local site to meet the spiritual and emotional needs of patients/residents, families, team members, and community, inclusive of all faith traditions and chosen Religious/ Spiritual/ Humanist paths. The Manager provides spiritual health care to patient, residents, families, and team members, as appropriate. This leader also manages chaplaincy training programs at their site and serves as a liaison with local faith communities' representatives of diverse faith traditions.



Core Responsibilities and Essential Functions:



Spiritual Health Care to Patients, Families/Support Systems, and Health Care Staff
- Determine spiritual, religious, and emotional care needs regardless of faith-tradition or spiritual path, heritage or culture; provide appropriate interventions, including spiritual assessments, rituals/sacraments, spiritual counseling and advisement, debriefings, crisis intervention, and bereavement support and memorial services, etc.
- Create a staff support program to deliver the above-named services including debriefings and crisis intervention, as needed.
- Maintains expected Departmental productivity standards and provides coaching to team members they are supervising regarding charting quality and productivity standards.
- Ensure 24/7 spiritual health coverage for local site(s); is expected be included in the on-call rotation on a regular basis, as determined by the site-specific needs. Supervision of Spiritual Health Team Members and Students
- Supervise daily clinical work of chaplains, including ensuring appropriate interventions, timely response, documentation, data collection, and evaluation
- Coach performance as needed. Assess learning needs annually and deploy strategies to meet these needs using innovative teaching strategies including formal and informal learning methods.
- Ensure timely completion of all annual competencies and CEUs by chaplains to maintain compliance with Wellstar, ecclesiastical ordination and endorsement, and BCC status.
- Write and deliver annual evaluations for chaplains.
- Recruit, select, and hire new team members, in collaboration with management and Human Resources
- Provide administrative oversite to CPE/chaplain students and/or supervise clinical work of CPE/chaplain students in collaboration with CPE Certified Educator(s), including ensuring appropriate interventions, timely response, documentation, data collection, and evaluation.
- Assist Executive Director/CPE Certified Educator(s) in preparation for site accreditation reviews and ensure on-going CPE program meets ACPE standards.
- Available to participate in CPE selection interviews for incoming CPE students.
- Managers in Hospice Settings ONLY Sustain a working knowledge of current national standards and guidelines for Hospice Chaplaincy as directed by NHPCO (National Hospice and Palliative Care Organization), CMS (Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services), and Joint Commission and ensure compliance. Integration of Spiritual Health
- Integrate Spiritual Health into daily workflow of patient/resident, family, and team member care.
- Lead, oversee, and participate in Advance Care Planning with patients.
- Participate in New Employee Orientation at local site.
- Build relationships with local site-specific leaders and participate in local site-specific initiatives and committees. Spiritual Health Department Programming
- Maintain a working knowledge of trends in the field of spiritual health and Joint Commission.
- Develop and maintain a Spiritual Health Volunteer program through collaboration with management and site-specific volunteer services, including onboarding, orientation, education, evaluation, and recognition of volunteers.
- Foster a collaborative relationship with diverse community clergy and faith group leaders as a resource for patients/residents and their families/support systems.
- Collaborate with management to develop a budget at local site and ensure adherence to budget.
- Collect and maintain data for Spiritual Health encounters and interventions to show impact of department and implement process improvement projects.
- Develop local education plan for chaplains and team members and collaborate with management on system-wide education initiatives.
- In collaboration with CPE Certified Educator(s), develop and implement CPE program/infrastructure for local site.



Required Minimum Education:



Master's Degree in Divinity, Theology, or equivalent Masters Level Degree from a graduate school, school of divinity or theology, or seminary accredited by the Association of Theological Schools (ATS)or one of the regional Association of Colleges and Schools. Required and
4 Units of Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) completed at a training center accredited by the Association for Clinical Pastoral Education (ACPE). Required



Required Minimum License(s) and Certification(s):

All certifications are required upon hire unless otherwise stated.


  • Board Certified Chaplain within 2 years or Associate Prof Counselor-Preferred




Additional License(s) and Certification(s):



Ordination or Licensure for ministry by a recognized faith group Upon Hire Preferred or
Ecclesiastical Endorsement for Hospital and/or Hospice Chaplaincy by a recognized endorsement agency. Upon Hire Preferred or
Board Certification (BCC) or BCC eligible with the Association of Professional Chaplains (APC), Neshama: Association of Jewish Chaplains (NAJC), the National Association of Catholic Chaplains (NACC), or National Association of Veterans Affairs Chaplains (NAVAC). Must complete BCC within 24-months of hire. within 2 years Preferred



Required Minimum Experience:



Minimum 5 years of experience in professional chaplaincy with progressive leadership responsibilities in a health care setting (may include 1 year of CPE Residency). Required and
Minimum 2 years formal experience managing a spiritual care program Preferred

Demonstrated ability to effectively offer spiritual health support to people of diverse systems of values and beliefs
Understanding of human resources, budgeting, and project management
Working knowledge of health care organizations and biomedical ethics
Ability to coach performance
Competent in Microsoft Office programs, and experience with electronic medical record documentation preferred.
