As a member of the healthcare team, the Emergency Services Technician assists the Licensed Independent Practitioner (L.I.P.), R.N. and Unit Secretary. The position is an integral part of the team approach to patient care and performs those tasks that contribute to the smooth and efficient flow of patients through the department.

PATIENT CARE: Provides patient care to newborn, child, adult and geriatric patients as delegated by and under the supervision of a registered nurse.
Follows established standards in providing patient care.
Organizes care with consideration of patient and unit activities.
Provides comfort measures, e.g. positioning, extra blankets/pillows.
Provides for safety through use of low bed position, side rails, restraints as ordered, adequate lighting, slippers, identification of hazards, assisted ambulation.
Assists Licensed Independent Practitioners with routine exams, e.g. positioning of patient to listen for breath sounds, etc., and pelvic exams.
Obtains vital signs as directed by RN.
Sets up equipment (e.g., suture tray, suction) as directed per RN utilizing proper technique.
Applies principles of body mechanics when positioning, transferring, and ambulating patients.
Assists with the transportation of patients.
May assist under the direction of charge nurse with chest compressions during CPR. May assist with application of EKG electrode placement, pulse oximetry placement, etc., as directed by RN.
Performs 12 lead EKG after orientation to equipment and instruction.
Performs point of care lab testing and quality controls after orientation to equipment and procedure.
Performs phlebotomy lab specimen collection after orientation to equipment, procedures and demonstrated competency.
May perform orthopedic splinting after orientation to supplies and procedures, and as directed by an RN or Licensed Independent Practitioner (L.I.P.).
May perform wound preparations and application of simple dressings after orientation to equipment and procedures and as directed by a RN. (In Oregon only)
Assists with the discharge of patients which may include reinforcement of discharge teaching done by RN.
Records and circulates during trauma resuscitations after proper education and demonstrated competencies.
COMMUNICATION: Uses appropriate communication skills in dealing with patients, visitors, EMS personnel, hospital personnel.
Communicates pertinent information regarding patients to appropriate RN.
Seeks assistance in understanding patient behavior.
Accurately documents patient belonging list using appropriate forms and standards.
Establishes rapport with patients, families, visitors, and other hospital personnel.
Gives directions to patients, families, and visitors in a courteous and clear manner.
Identifies administrative lines and reports pertinent information to the appropriate individual(s).
ENVIRONMENTAL DUTIES: Demonstrates responsibility and accountability for maintenance and safety of unit equipment and supplies.
Maintains the patient care area:
Prepares areas for patient arrival.
Provides needed decontamination of rooms and supplies in conjunction with housekeeping utilizing universal precautions.
Follows established procedures for protection of self and others in handling bodily substances utilizing universal precautions.
Keeps dirty utility room, kitchen, and lounge neat and orderly in conjunction with other Emergency Department members.
Empties laundry and trash containers as needed and at the end of shift.
Distributes linen and MSO supplies and actively reports inability to do so to next oncoming shift.
Cleans patient care areas after patient discharge and prepare for next patient.
Transports specimens to the lab using universal precautions.
Transports prescriptions to and from pharmacy, delivering filled prescriptions to RN.
Cross trains to unit secretary role for back-up and meal relief. To receive orientation to this early in training period.
Maintains an awareness of equipment operation and arranges for needed repair or reports to appropriate personnel.
Demonstrates effective and efficient use of supplies and equipment.
EDUCATION: Demonstrates and maintains active working knowledge of the Credentialing competencies for Emergency Services Techs. There will be a three-month leeway between time of hire and mandatory completion of competencies which will be turned in to nurse manager.
Participates in educational process for self and others.
Assists with orientation of new employees as delegated.
Supports and may participate in education process of students.
Assesses self-learning needs and participates in educational programs to increase competence and meet personal needs and goals.
Attends and participates in meetings and committees as delegated.
Completes all required in-services on fire, safety, infection control, etc. as mandated by hospital policy.

Education:
High School diploma or equivalent.
Experience:
Previous patient care experience in an Emergency environment and/or with children strongly preferred.
Skills:
Basic medical terminology. Computer familiarity. Able to work in a fast-paced environment with ability to prioritize multiple assignments.
