DESCRIPTION

Michael Baker International is seeking a Department Manager to lead our Surface Water Group in the Great Lakes Region. The Surface Water Department resides within the focused Water Practice within our Pittsburgh, PA Office and represents a dedicated business line that is focused on public and private drainage systems, BMP design, NPDES permitting, H&H Analysis, as well as the assessment and design of high hazard dam facilities. The successful candidate will be responsible for building Michael Baker International's role throughout the nation while supporting our project teams and client base that we service. As part of Michael Baker, the opportunity also exists for the successful candidate to interface with other water focused practices across the company to share resources and best practices across a larger water community.

Our projects involve supporting the Public and Private sectors with a focus design and assessment of spillways, penstocks, and other dam structure components; stormwater collection and conveyance systems; natural channel design; and bridge hydraulics, scour, floodplain evaluation projects. Candidates should also be experienced with permitting processes through agencies such as Dam Safety, FERC, and Army Corps of Engineers and State DOTs. A willingness and ability to travel within western Pennsylvania and the Great Lakes region on an as needed basis is required. This is a unique opportunity to oversee all aspects of a water resources engineering business with a diverse project / client base that has the potential for significant growth. Primary responsibilities include operational oversight, technical thought leadership, staff development, business and strategy development, client management, profit and loss and leadership.

Additional responsibilities include:


  • Meet with existing clients to identify upcoming opportunities and confirm performance on existing contracts
  • Monitor and implement strategies to fulfill business performance objectives
  • Develop new client relationships
  • Coordinate with other offices to facilitate workshare, the implementation of best practices and developing work with those offices requiring civil engineering services
  • Accompany other project staff at client meetings to further develop business with existing clients
  • Monitor project execution to ensure our services are being performed to a high standard
  • Lead strategic pursuits and QA technical and cost proposals
  • Ensure QA/QC procedures are being implemented on all department projects
  • Provide technical oversight and guidance of engineering solutions
  • Conduct operational meetings with staff to review and evaluate workload, resource planning, project performance, and business development opportunities
  • Lead the team at every opportunity to articulate your vision and establish your personal standards for professionalism, teamwork, quality, and technical excellence
  • Interview and hire new staff to fulfill current project needs while also planning for the future of the business
  • Mentor engineering personnel in their technical and management competencies to help them achieve their career objectives
  • Identify training opportunities for staff consistent with their career objectives
  • Provide honest, prompt, and constructive feedback to personnel
  • Attend and participate in industry events
  • Ability to work within a flexible workspace with the opportunity to maintain a hybrid schedule mixing telework and in person work

PROFESSIONAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Bachelor's Degree in Civil or Environmental Engineering
  • 10+ years of civil and/or environmental engineering experience in design and management of stormwater and surface water engineering projects
  • Pennsylvania or Ohio P.E. license, or have the ability to obtain one
  • Strong leader with an entrepreneurial spirit and business acumen that wants to be empowered to develop this great opportunity
  • Knowledge of local, regional, and national civil engineering initiatives
  • Proven supervisory skills
  • Experience working in and managing a diverse staff in a hybrid workplace setting
  • Strong problem-solving and verbal / written communication skills
  • Ability to work in a dynamic environment and conduct multi-tasking efforts

COMPENSATION

The approximate annual compensation range for this position is $120k - $200k. This compensation range is a good faith estimate for the position at the time of posting.
