 The Department of English at Colby College invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor in African American Literature and expressive cultures of the 20th and 21st Centuries. We welcome a wide variety of approaches to contribute to our innovative English department, as well as to our vibrant departments in African American Studies and American Studies, including applicants who can support the English major concentration in Literature and the Environment and/or candidates who adopt comparative approaches, such as those focusing on Indigenous Studies, the Black Diaspora, and the Black Atlantic.


 


The English Department at Colby is unusual among liberal arts colleges in offering majors in English, in English with a concentration in Literature and the Environment, and in English with a concentration in Creative Writing. Many students from across campus also minor in English or in Creative Writing. We support a lively array of lectures, faculty work-in-progress seminars, and readings, and we foster both student and faculty research through grants and off-campus opportunities. Many Colby students and most English majors study abroad for at least one semester; our courses provide a strong foundation for their understanding of cultural differences.





Qualifications:


 


For this position we seek a teacher-scholar with demonstrated teaching excellence and strong record of research. Teaching will include first-year writing and departmental core courses including Foundations of Literary Study (introduction to the major) and/or Critical Theory. Candidates will teach upper level courses in their field of specialization and supervise honors theses. PhD must be in hand no later than August 2025.
