We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Principal Design Technician to complete complex drafting and design projects. This position involves creating 3D models and detailed technical drawings ensuring compliance with industry standards and collaborating with engineering teams to support product development and released product maintenance. The ideal candidate will bring advanced knowledge in design drafting, time management skills, and a commitment to delivering high-quality work.

The Cardiac Surgery Operating Unit develops life-restoring therapies and healthcare solutions that span the care continuum; integrating technologies and applying clinical and economic evidence to increase patient access, improve efficiency of procedures and deliver successful patient outcomes.

This position is based in Brooklyn Park, MN within the Cardiac Surgery (CS) Operating Unit and requires to be on-site.

A Day in the Life

In general, the following responsibilities apply for the Principal Design Technician role. This includes, but is not limited to, the following:


  • Collaborating with engineers and other stakeholders to develop 3D models and detailed 2D drawings of medical device products and test fixtures using Creo.

  • Reviewing and analyzing technical drawings to ensure alignment with project goals and drafting industry standards.

  • Identifying and communicating potential design issues and recommend solutions.

  • Maintaining and updating design databases, libraries, and document control systems to ensure validity and compliance.

  • Staying informed about advancements in drafting tools, techniques, and industry trends to enhance design processes and team capabilities.

  • Operating 3D printing equipment for prototyping support.

  • Adhering to standard operating procedures and drafting standards to ensure quality and consistency.

Qualifications -

Must Have - Minimum Requirements

  • High school diploma, vocational or technical education

  • Minimum of 8 years of work experience in mechanical design drafting

Nice to Have


  • Proficiency in Creo drafting software.

  • Understanding of ASME Y14.5, including geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T).

  • Understanding of mechanical manufacturing processes and how they relate to design.

  • Proven ability to manage project timelines and execute deliverables efficiently.

  • Proven ability to resolve technical CAD challenges independently.

  • Experience working with a documentation control system.

  • Experience drafting in the medical device industry.

  • Hands-on experience with 3D scanning and printing equipment.

Salary ranges for U.S (excl. PR) locations (USD):$80,400.00 - $120,600.00

This position is eligible for a short-term incentive called the Medtronic Incentive Plan (MIP).

The base salary range is applicable across the United States, excluding Puerto Rico and specific locations in California. The offered rate complies with federal and local regulations and may vary based on factors such as experience, certification/education, market conditions, and location. Compensation and benefits information pertains solely to candidates hired within the United States (local market compensation and benefits will apply for others).

The following benefits and additional compensation are available to those regular employees who work 20+ hours per week: Health, Dental and vision insurance , Health Savings Account , Healthcare Flexible Spending Account , Life insurance, Long-term disability leave , Dependent daycare spending account , Tuition assistance/reimbursement , and Simple Steps (global well-being program).
