Unit Mission Statement:

Finance is responsible for the financial business activities at William & Mary (W&M) and the Virginia Institute of Marine Science (VIMS) in order to support the University's primary mission of education, research and public service.


Position Summary:

The Internal Controls Accountant is responsible for assisting in the planning and performing of centralized testing of internal controls on a continuous basis in accordance with the state comptroller's Agency Risk Management and Internal Controls (ARMICS) guidelines. Reporting to the Assistant Director of internal Controls and Automation, this position helps provide the basis for determining that the University's controls over its significant fiscal processes are designed appropriately and operating effectively.Specific responsibilities include:


  • Support the Assistant Director in the preparation and execution of the annual ARMICS work plan.

  • Participate in developing the annual work plan to determine the nature, timing, and extent of testing procedures.

  • Conduct and document detailed ARMICS testing of internal controls on a continuous basis to support the annual certification to the Commonwealth of Virginia.

  • Accumulate testing results and identify areas for follow-up or improvement.

  • Contribute to developing documentation for each process for both ARMICS purposes and department and University needs.

  • Ensure that the ARMICS work plan remains on schedule to meet internal deadlines and milestones and to communicate statuses or issues encountered in a timely manner.

  • Assist in compiling results and required documentation for submission to the Commonwealth.

Required Qualifications:



  • Bachelor's degree or an equivalent combination of education and or experience.

  • Several years of experience (typically, 3-5 years of experience,) with accounting operations.

  • Several years of experience using automated accounting or financial systems.

  • Experience with generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP) and internal control concepts and accounting processes.

  • Demonstrated proficiency in a variety of software applications, including Microsoft Office (Excel) with a particular aptitude to work with database reporting tools, pivot tables, core functions of highly detailed spreadsheets, and flowcharts.

  • Demonstrated ability to adhere to consistent practices and standards with a high degree of reliability, and ethical judgment.

  • Demonstrated ability to work autonomously, manage work priorities/project schedules, and adhere to strict deadlines and timeframes.

  • Proven analytical skills with the demonstrated ability to analyze and discern individual business processes within the context of the operations.

  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively, orally and in writing, with a diverse constituency.

  • Demonstrated skills in writing with the ability to clearly and accurately document procedures, and concisely present recommendations to improve operational guidance.


Preferred Qualifications:



  • Advanced degree (preferably a Master's degree) in Accounting.

  • Certification as a Public Accountant (CPA).

  • Prior auditing experience or experience in public accounting.

  • Experience in Banner (Finance system).

Advertised Pay Range:

Up to $62,000, commensurate with experience


Advertised Pay Range Statement:

All hiring rates are commensurate with relevant experience up to the advertised amount considering internal alignment.
