The Curriculum in Global Studies is an academic unit within the College of Arts and Sciences that offers a dynamic undergraduate major and an innovative, 'applied research' master's program. Unlike a traditional international or area studies approach, the Curriculum in Global Studies focuses on analysis of trans-regional and trans-national themes, events, and processes that affect states and societies around the world. Students focus on issues with contemporary global significance and policy relevance. Through our commitment to excellence in teaching, advising, and mentoring, Global Studies promotes interdisciplinary understanding of critical global issues. In addition, we work to encourage discussions about these issues among our students, faculty, and the broader Chapel Hill community through outreach, events, and other programming. We actively support our students taking advantage of global opportunities outside of the classroom including study abroad, experiential learning, and globally-focused internships and research projects, both locally and abroad.
The Student Services Specialist for the Curriculum in Global Studies is responsible for the day-to-day management of all student services and related administrative work for both undergraduate and graduate students in Global Studies. This includes managing, promoting, administering, and leading activities in the areas of admissions, financial aid, and course registration as well as the creation, maintenance, and student enrollment in all of Global Studies's GLBL classes on an undergraduate and graduate level. Additionally, the Student Services Specialist is responsible for student development programming along with related budgeting creation and projections for program continuation.
This position is responsible for managing data using a variety of computer applications; making independent decisions within university policy, interpreting, communicating, and adhering to policies; and managing student personnel along with maintaining effective working relationships with and among students, parents, faculty, and staff, and other external entities. This includes acting as the primary staff contact for the undergraduate student organization, Global Studies Student Association. Acting as the Curriculum's coordinator for all undergraduate and graduate events, this work includes research, planning, development, and implementation of student programming in response to student and university needs
The Student Services Specialist will report to the Business Manager of the Curriculum and work closely with the Chair and Directors of Undergraduate and Graduate Studies. Employees will be required to exercise confidentiality in accordance with policy and applicable state, federal, and local laws such as FERPA (Family and Educational Rights and Privacy Act). Position will also be expected to make administrative decisions regarding budget management, facilities and inventory management, program expenses within current funding levels, as well as projecting future expenses for program continuation, development, and implementation.
Bachelor's degree; or equivalent combination of training and experience. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.
This position requires strong written and verbal communication skills, along with advanced demonstrated knowledge of Microsoft Excel, Word, and Outlook. The selected candidate must also demonstrate superior interpersonal skills, attention to detail, coordination, leadership, problem-solving, confidentiality and organizational skills while being able to work in a fast-paced environment. The successful applicant will have a demonstrated ability to multi-task, the ability to prioritize deadlines and organizes ideas, events and other work tasks. The ideal candidate will be self-directed, recognizing the need for attention to detail while meeting deadlines as well as have demonstrated analytical skills. The ideal candidate should also be comfortable with and have experience in dealing with a wide range of constituencies- prospective students, current students, faculty, and administrators.
Experience in student services in an academic environment is preferred.
Expertise in Connect Carolina, Microsoft Suites, Google Suites, Canva, and Qualtrics preferred
Experience with graphic design towards the creation of newsletters, flyers, and posters are preferred.
This position is designated as a Campus Security Authority in accordance with the Clery Act. This position will be required to report Clery crimes to the Clery Compliance Manager and complete annual training about reporting responsibilities.
