Job Description:

The Role

At Moderna, we strive to make the greatest possible impact on humanity with mRNA medicines. We are seeking a Director of Software Engineering to lead the teams responsible for building and operating platforms that power the manufacturing of individualized medicines to combat cancer.

These platforms orchestrate complex, event-driven workflows, seamlessly integrating systems across healthcare providers, labs, manufacturing execution systems, supply chains, and distribution networks. They ensure the timely and cost-effective production and delivery of personalized therapies. Key components include a control tower for real-time insights and automated decision-making, an orchestrator to automate complex, interdependent tasks across distributed systems to ensure efficient and reliable process execution, as well as a scheduler to optimize high-capacity, make-to-order schedules for personalized medicine.

In this role, you will lead cross-functional teams (both onshore and offshore), collaborate with external suppliers and healthcare providers, and guide the development and operation of these transformative platforms.

Here's What You'll Do

  • Recruit and Manage Top Talent: Evaluate and rigorously assess candidates for technical fit and alignment with team values, ensuring they can contribute effectively to team goals. Build a high-performing team capable of designing, implementing, and maintaining scalable, event-driven architectures.

  • Foster Team Productivity: Create a collaborative and supportive environment to drive continuous improvement in team output, measured by metrics like sprint velocity, pre-release defect rates, and post-release incidents.

  • Code and Architecture Oversight: Conduct technical reviews of architecture, design, and code to ensure functionality, scalability, resiliency, fault tolerance, and adherence to best practices. Provide actionable feedback on pull requests to maintain high code quality and smooth integration.

  • Service-Oriented Architecture Development: Lead the team in developing a modular, service-oriented architecture in compliance with GMP and regulatory requirements throughout the product lifecycle.

  • Operational Ownership: Take ownership of product operations, ensuring rapid resolution of customer-impacting issues within SLA. Be prepared to step in hands-on for incident investigations and fixes when needed.

  • Technical Leadership: Define scope, estimate effort, and schedule engineering work in alignment with product priorities. Unlock delivery through comprehensive testing protocols and DevOps practices for rapid, reliable deployments.

  • Continuous Improvement: Champion advanced testing practices to ensure high-quality testing coverage and operational excellence in production environments.

  • Collaboration: Work closely with stakeholders across healthcare, manufacturing, supply chain, and external partners to ensure platform success in a highly regulated, fast-paced environment.

Here's What You'll Need (Minimum Qualifications)

  • Educational Background: Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field (or equivalent experience).

  • People Management Expertise: Proven experience building, managing, and mentoring high-performing engineering teams, with a strong focus on recruiting top talent and fostering a collaborative culture.

  • Technical Leadership: Extensive experience in software engineering with expertise in modular service architectures, event-driven systems, and data integration, coupled with hands-on experience guiding teams through complex technical challenges.

  • Full-Stack Development: Proficiency in front-end technologies (React, Angular) and back-end languages (Node.js, Python, Java) with a demonstrated ability to meet both functional and non-functional requirements.

  • Cloud and Infrastructure: Deep experience with cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, GCP), databases (SQL, NoSQL), and containerization tools (Docker, Kubernetes), with a proven ability to manage scalable, highly available systems.

  • CI/CD and Deployment: Experience with CI/CD pipelines and tools like Flux, ensuring efficient, large-scale deployments in production environments.

  • Operational Stability: Demonstrated ability to oversee operational stability at scale, including incident management and proactive issue prevention.

  • Regulatory and Compliance Knowledge: Familiarity with regulatory standards, particularly in healthcare or manufacturing, and the ability to ensure platform compliance with industry regulations.

  • Communication and Collaboration: Excellent communication and cross-functional collaboration skills, with experience working with diverse stakeholders across healthcare, manufacturing, supply chain, and regulatory teams.

  • Problem-Solving Skills: Proven ability to deliver high-quality solutions under tight timelines in fast-paced, cross-functional environments.

  • This role is expected to be in office 70% of the time with flexibility to work from home up to 30%.
