Job Description:

Are you passionate about horses and looking to be part of the thrilling world of horse racing? The Nebraska Racing and Gaming Commission is seeking dedicated Test Barn Technicians for the 2025 racing season! This is a unique opportunity to work directly with horses, ensuring the integrity of the sport in Nebraska.


Tentative 2025 racing schedule:
Grand Island - Feb 15 - May 3
Lincoln - May 9 - June 8
Omaha - TBD
Columbus - June 13 -July 13
Hastings or Ogallala - TBD
South Sioux City - TBD


Compensation will be $18-$21 per hour, commensurate with education and/or relevant experience, if approved.



Examples of Work



  • Collects urine and blood (if authorized) samples of horses in the test barn for analysis.

  • Verifies identity of horses through tattoo or microchip.

  • Completes chain of custody forms.

  • Maintains cleanliness and organization of test barn.

  • Other duties as assigned by veterinarian or Commission.




Requirements / Qualifications:




Minimum Qualifications: High school diploma or GED. 3+ years' experience working with horses. Post-secondary education in veterinary science or veterinary assistant programs is preferred. Test



Other: This job requires regular, reliable onsite attendance. Must possess a valid driver's license, provide own transportation, and have ability to work schedule that aligns with racing season. Must submit to fingerprinting and be able pass background check.



Knowledge, Skills & Abilities



  • Strong attention to detail and ability to closely follow standard operating procedures.

  • Ability to work effectively with stakeholders including horsemen, racing officials, and Commission staff.

  • Skilled in working with horses and some knowledge of equine science; ability to confidently take samples.

  • Must be able to work in extreme outdoor conditions, both hot and cold.

  • Must be physical able to move about the test barn, including frequent walking, stooping, reaching, lifting, and bending.

  • Ability to travel regularly to Nebraska racetrack locations and work a flexible schedule that aligns with the racing schedule, sometimes on holidays.
