Job Role Summary




The Radiologic Technologist Specialist - Ultrasonographer/Vascular Ultrasonographer is responsible for preparing and performing ultrasound examinations under the direction of a specialized physician. This includes scheduling patients, reviewing medical history, preparing patients and equipment, administering procedure, and relating results to supervisor.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities






  • Proactively contributes to Eskenazi Health's mission: Advocate, Care, Teach, and Serve with special emphasis on the vulnerable population of Marion County; models Eskenazi Health's values

  • Schedules patients and performs ultrasound examinations of designated body regions, under direction of a physician specializing in diagnostic medical sonography

  • Reviews requisition, patient's medical chart, and records oral history from patient to define reason for diagnostic examination

  • Educates each patient concerning ultrasound procedures

  • Prepares ultrasound examination including: positioning and preparing patients for examinations, determining appropriate equipment to be used, setting and modifying controls during procedure for optimal scanning results, and observing patients

  • Performs ultrasound examination by: using interpretative skills during procedure to identify and record normal/abnormal test results and real/potential medical problems, relating atypical results/problems to supervisor for assessment and action, and may be required to transport imaging equipment to patient bedside

  • Maintains supplies required for daily use

  • Assists physicians in performing special examinations, emergency medical care and research projects

  • Must remain in compliance with all Indiana State Department of Health and The Joint Commission education, license and certification requirements.

  • Trains and precepts students and/or new employees

  • Must remain in compliance with all American College of Radiology, Indiana State Department of Health and The Joint Commission education, license and certification requirements.





Job Requirements





Radiologic Technologist Specialist I - Ultrasonographer/Vascular Ultrasonographer



  • Graduation from an AMA approved Radiologic Technology Program

  • Bachelor's degree in Ultrasound-related major preferred

  • Certification as a Registered Diagnostic Medical Sonographer (RDMS) or ARRT specialty certification within the first year of employment which includes compliance with Professional CEU requirements

  • Appropriate credentialing is required for Vascular Ultrasound Department within 1 year of graduation of a vascular program OR within 2 years of hire if cross-training which includes compliance with Professional CEU requirements

  • Maintains and shows proof of current CPR Certification




Radiologic Technologist Specialist II - Ultrasonographer/Vascular Ultrasonographer



  • One year of clinical/work experience in radiologic technology with emphasis on Ultrasound

  • Bachelor's degree in Ultrasound-related major strongly preferred

  • Certification as a Registered Diagnostic Medical Sonographer (RDMS) or ARRT specialty certification required

  • Appropriate credentialing is required for Vascular Ultrasound Department

  • Maintains and shows proof of current CPR Certification





Knowledge, Skills & Abilities






  • Knowledge and command of anatomy as well as cross sectional anatomy

  • Knowledge of the physics of ultrasound

  • Knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of patients served; ability to use age-appropriate communication skills

  • Must demonstrate knowledge of growth and development principles over the life span; ability to assess data and interpret appropriate information needed to identify each patient's requirements relative to age-specific needs and cognitive abilities detailed in the department/area/unit job competencies

  • Knowledge of all ultrasound equipment, drug utilization and technical procedures (within assigned area)

  • Working knowledge of the EPIC and PACS systems and associated programs; ensures completion of all studies through EPIC

  • Knowledge of hospital protocols and procedures, and safety procedures to minimize risk to patients, coworkers, and self

  • Knowledgeable of and compliance with Eskenazi Health's Infection Control and Communicable Disease policies and procedures

  • Ability to follow both written and oral instructions

  • Ability to handle patient contacts with high degree of tact

  • Ability to elect proper protocols for all exams

  • Fundamental knowledge of computer applications

  • Ability to be flexible with changing work duties and priorities

  • Knowledgeable of and proficiency in vascular patient clinical assessment, in performing vascular examinations and testing, and in the evaluation of findings

  • Ability to observe and perceive changing patient conditions, and to report questionable conditions to physicians and nursing personnel

  • Ability to work effectively under stress and heavy workload

  • Ability to prioritize work assignments, i.e., decisions must be made to determine how quickly a case needs to be scheduled for an examination
