Job Role Summary




The Medical Technologist performs pre-analytic, analytic and post-analytic clinical laboratory testing to assist other healthcare providers in the diagnosis and treatment of patients as well as in disease monitoring and prevention. Technologists must comply with all Eskenazi Health, Pathology Department and Section specific policies and procedures in addition to all regulatory standards and our PRIDE values. Technologists may work in one or more areas of the laboratory to include Chemistry, Hematology, Microbiology/Serology and Blood Bank.




Job Requirements






  • Bachelor of Science in Medical Technology OR

  • Associate of Science in Medical Laboratory Technology OR

  • Bachelor of Science in a related life science (e.g. Biology or Chemistry - must have 2 years' experience working in clinical lab).

  • Degrees must be from an accredited U.S. college or university or foreign degrees must be officially assessed to determine U.S. equivalency.

  • ASCP or equivalent certification eligible





Essential Functions and Responsibilities






  • Follows policies and procedures (SOPs) to ensure minimal errors during the pre-analytic phase of testing. Evaluates acceptability of specimens for testing ordered, including documentation. Prepares specimens for testing, including accessioning in the LIS as needed. Follows up and documents appropriately all specimen/order errors/issues. Monitors inventory and supplies and notifies the appropriate individual before supply is depleted.

  • Follows policies and procedures to ensure minimal errors during the testing phase. Performs laboratory testing for patient specimens and proficiency samples. Performs and documents quality control, assesses acceptability and records any corrective action. Performs laboratory testing for patient. Performs and documents equipment maintenance. Performs minor repairs/troubleshoots problems. Records/communicates issues and documents corrective action. Actively participates in completion of daily tasks (in addition to QC/PM), including shift hand offs.

  • Follows policies and procedures to ensure minimal errors during the post-analytic phase of testing. Verifies and reports patient test results accurately in the LIS, including proper documentation during computer downtimes (e.g. delta checks). Communicates critical values and corrected results to appropriate caregiver and documents communication completely. Works carefully and checks work to ensure minimal clerical errors. Documents accurately when correcting errors/issuing corrected results.

  • Completes assignments/mandatories according to policies and procedures and manager direction, with complete documentation and within designated time frames. Includes, but not limited to: Procedure and policy reviews, Occupational Health requirements, Section specific competencies, Proficiency testing, Hospital annual education. Where applicable, the employee must maintain all certifications and submit updated credentials to their manager.

  • Prioritizes and organizes work effectively to balance multiple tasks, while maintaining quality standards. Maintains turnaround time standards for patient testing, including the use of outstanding lists, worksheets, etc; Assists others to maintain an efficient workflow and meet turnaround time expectations.

  • Functions as a self-starter, arrives to work on scheduled days and is in the section ready to begin work at the start of the shift, as well as demonstrates flexibility with schedule to meet the needs of the department/section (e.g. scheduled/unscheduled overtime, extra shifts, on-call). Stays busy with Eskenazi Health work throughout the assigned shift by assisting others or finding tasks to complete. Ensures continuity of workflow by communicating with co-workers when leaving the work area.

  • Identifies and solves problems and issues independently and documents appropriately.

  • Performs other job-related duties as assigned (examples include but are not limited to: training students and/or new employees, assisting in startup studies for instruments or new procedures, assisting in validation of computer or interface upgrades and changes)
