ORGANIZATIONAL SUMMARY:

The School of Aging Studies (SAS) is one of the nation's first cohort of degree-awarding programs in Gerontology. Our PhD in Aging Studies program, established in 1994, was the third interdisciplinary program in Gerontology/Aging Studies in the U.S. Graduates of our PhD program have achieved great success in academia, postdoctoral fellowships, and policy positions. SAS also offers master?s degrees in Gerontology and Applied Aging Sciences, graduate certificate programs in Gerontology and Clinical Aging Sciences, as well as two undergraduate degree programs in Health Care Administration and Aging Sciences, along with and a minor in Aging Studies.

The NIH NOSI (NOT-AG-21-049): Dementia Care Workforce for Those Living with Alzheimer's Disease-Related Dementias calls for research to develop training for direct care workers to identify competencies that improve organizational processes related to staffing and ADRD care outcomes.

POSITION SUMMARY:

Reporting to the PI, the study research nurse will be responsible for assisted living resident data abstraction from chart review in study sites in the Tampa area. They will be responsible to set up the database for data entry and verification of data using the RedCap software program under the direction of study statistician and Principal Investigator. Travel is required. Must have own transportation.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Assist with data abstraction at baseline, three and six months from medical charts of residents participating in an assisted living clinical trial who have a diagnosis of dementia for 225 subjects in 15 assisted living sites in the Tampa area. The study nurse will interact with nurses and administrative staff at the assisted living to locate both physical hard copies of resident medical charts and how to access electronic health records. The data to be collected are diagnoses so ICD-9 codesvso familiarity with these is required; medications and frequency of use, data from physician and nurses notes, advance directives. The nurse will need to have their own transportation.
  • Collect the data on hard copy forms and enter the above described chart abstracted data for 225 subjects at baseline, three and six months in a secure RedCap cloud database in the USF study lab office, on a computer that is password protected. The study nurse will also double enter for reliability checks of the data the second study nurses' data forms.
  • Responsible for entering all dates of data collection for each participant and their status at each data collection point (e.g., died and date of death, discharged and location, withdrawn from study, admitted to hospice and date). This will be done in the RedCap tracking system data in the USF Research Lab on the Tampa campus within 24 hours of at a data collection site.
  • Responsible for setting up their data collection at the site and documenting the communication with the administrator or nurse liasion at the AL site.
  • Regular weekly meeting with the study staff (PI, Post-Doc, biostatistician) to provide updates on progress of data collection and to learn of new sites as they are onboarded. Regular daily email communication will be required to maintain contact with AL site staff and research staff.
  • Performs other duties as assigned

POSITION QUALIFICATIONS:

MINIMUM: This position requires licensure as a registered nurse in accordance with Chapter 464, Florida Statutes, or eligible to practice nursing in accordance with Chapter 64 B9, Florida Administrative Code. Bachelor's degree in Nursing with two years of nursing research or directly related experience; OR an Associate's degree in Nursing with four years of same experience. A Master's degree in Nursing is Preferred

PREFERRED: Familiarity with electronic and hard copy medical records in long-term care settings (assisted living or nursing home) is preferred. Research experience and familiarity with RedCap or similar cloud database entry systems (e.g., Qualtrics) preferred. Excellent communication skills preferred. Experience with team science.
