CALS Dairy and Maple Support Technician

The CALS Facilities Support Technician splits time between the Miller Research Educational Center (MREC) in Colchester, VT and Proctor Maple Research Center (PMRC) in Underhill, VT, supporting sugaring and farming operations and the College's triple mission (research, education and outreach). Work at each site under the functional supervision of each site's Facility Coordinator to perform tasks ranging from operating trucks, tractors and ATVs, and various hand tools used in farming and forestry. At MREC this position will primarily support the dairy operation by participating in feed and manure management. At PMRC this position will support the sugaring operations in the sugarhouses and woodlands.
A High School Diploma, and four years of related experience. Due to the requirement for frequent self-direction and to perform repeated tasks in a particular specified manner following requirements are expected:· A minimum of 2 years of experience operating equipment, with specific familiarity with tractors, skid steers, and utility vehicles.· 1 year of forestry experience, including having had introductory instructional and safety training for basic forest maintenance and work in remote areas.· 2 years experience assisting the operation of sugarhouse equipment and sapline tubing systems.· 4 years experience handling and performing routine maintenance on heavy equipment.2 years experience handling large animals.
Introductory chainsaw experience, use of GPS systems for mapping, working knowledge of MS Office applications.
$19 to $25 per hour
PMRC (January through May) Miller June through December
This position is expected to work increased hours during the maple sugaring seasons. Weekend and non-standard may be required during sugaring season (January through May).This position is subject to a Post offer pre-employment physical screening.
This is a new position; the location assessment and timing may be adjusted based on the needs of the facilities. From January through May, this position will be housed out of the Proctor Maple Research Center in Underhill, VT. From June through December, this position will be housed at the Miller Educational Research Center in Colchester, VT. However, travel between the sites throughout the year is expected.
You must have reliable transportation to be able to travel between job sites, and able to travel in inclement weather.
