The Department of Chemical and Petroleum Engineering at the University of Pittsburgh invites applications for a faculty position at the assistant professor level in the areas of catalysis and energy with an expected start date of fall 2025.
Successful candidates are expected to have a PhD in Chemical Engineering or a closely related discipline, a strong record of academic accomplishments, a proven ability to work collaboratively, and a willingness to expand disciplinary boundaries to address complex technical and societal challenges. The candidate is expected to create a vibrant research program funded by federal, state, and industry sources and must show a strong commitment to high-quality teaching at both the undergraduate and graduate levels for a diverse student body and to assist our department in enhancing diversity. Candidates from groups traditionally underrepresented in engineering are strongly encouraged to apply.
Our department has internationally recognized programs in Energy and Sustainability, Catalysis and Reaction Engineering, Materials, Multi-Scale Modeling, and Biomedical Engineering. Active collaborations exist with several adjacent centers, including the U.S. DOE National Energy Technology Laboratory, the University of Pittsburgh Center for Research Computing, the Center for Energy, the Petersen Institute for Nanoscience and Engineering, the Mascaro Center for Sustainable Innovation, the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, and the McGowan Institute for Regenerative Medicine. The department also has a strategic alliance with the Lubrizol Corporation, a leading specialty chemicals company, with a particular focus on decarbonization and process intensification. Furthermore, the University of Pittsburgh, jointly with Covestro LLC, just created the first graduate certificate program on circular economy in the United States.
