Physician Advisor to Case Management - Cooley Dickinson Hospital
The Physician Advisor to Case Management will join one other physician working within the Department of Case Management (DCM) to provide physician guidance to the DCM and the hospital. This 0.15 FTE role comprises both day-to-day, case-specific efforts to improve patient throughput as well as work on longer-term strategic initiatives to further the DCM's mission to ensure that every patient receives the right care in the right place in a timely manner.
Physician Advisors work closely with Case Management and hospital leadership, floor case managers, and clinical teams to optimize the use of hospital services for all patients while ensuring quality of care is provided. Role functions include:
• Leadership at long-stay meetings, admission avoidance, or other capacity-related hospital committees requiring case management expertise
• Attending multidisciplinary rounds as needed
• Communication with hospital and clinical leadership regarding Case Management issues
• Engaging with physicians and APPs who may be experiencing challenges with patient progression/discharge, resource use, and documentation compliance
In addition, Physician Advisors help to ensure the appropriate utilization of hospital resources as required by our payers. As such, an understanding of payer's guidelines, especially Medicare's, is an essential skill that a new Physician Advisor will acquire with the help of the current Physician Advisors and other CM leadership. Additional utilization management roles include:
• Serving on the Utilization Review Committee
• Assisting with concurrent review of utilization management such as appropriate level of care and retrospective review of denials for all payers
• Providing information, guidance, and education to physicians on the appeals process and developing new strategies to optimize utilization of resources
• Representing CDH/in dealings with outside entities, such as payers, Administrative Law Judge or reconsideration hearing proceedings
To best fulfill these duties described above, the PACMs have a two-person call schedule during workday hours.
This job is designed for a physician with extensive inpatient clinical experience (ideally as the Attending of Record), a strong interest in clinical operations, as well as outstanding interpersonal skills to work with and help educate our colleagues in the hospital community.
The DCM is committed to fostering a diverse, equitable, and inclusive work environment, and we encourage candidates from all backgrounds to apply for this Physician Advisor role. We believe that diversity strengthens our organization and enhances our ability to provide high-quality care to our patients.
Applicants should be MGB/CDMG physicians who currently practice in the inpatient setting at CDH. Please send a cover letter and CV to Recruitment@cooleydickinson.org
