Overview

RES is seeking a Water Resources Design Engineer with 1+ years of experience, or equivalent internships, to join our Raleigh, NC team.

RES is the nation’s largest and most experienced provider of ecological restoration and water resource solutions. To date, we have restored over 294 stream miles and 58,000 wetland acres, conserved and preserved 9,100 acres of endangered species habitats, and planted over 14 million restorative trees. Our work balances economic development with ecological sustainability through innovative solutions such as nature-based stormwater management and coastal resilience projects.

The Mission: As a Designer, you’ll take part in projects from concept to construction and long-term monitoring, gaining hands-on experience throughout the project life cycle. Our team is driven by the opportunity to make a real impact on communities and ecosystems through adaptive, sustainable engineering practices.

You’ll be supported by experienced mentors, and your work will directly contribute to restoring natural habitats, improving water quality, and enhancing resilience to flooding and coastal challenges.



Responsibilities

  • Designing and planning projects focused on river restoration, streambank stabilization, wetland restoration, and nature-based stormwater management solutions.
  • Supporting the development of coastal resilience projects to mitigate flooding and storm impacts.
  • Preparing engineering evaluations, technical reports, specifications, design plans, construction schedules, and cost estimates.
  • Conducting field visits to assess project sites and observe construction progress, connecting your designs to real-world implementation.
  • Collaborating with a multi-disciplinary team, including biologists, ecologists, geomorphologists, and regulatory specialists, to deliver innovative solutions.
  • Communicating with clients, project stakeholders, and permitting agencies to achieve project goals.

Qualifications



We would love to talk to you if you have many of the following:

  • B.S. in civil, environmental, water resources, or natural resources engineering (or a related field).
  • Experience or coursework in AutoCAD Civil 3D, grading applications, GIS, hydrologic modeling, or hydraulic modeling.
  • Experience or coursework solving environmental and water resources problems.
  • Ability to occasionally travel to project sites for fieldwork and team collaboration.
  • Obtained or in the process of obtaining Engineer in Training (EIT) certification. Commitment to pursuing Professional Engineer (PE) licensure within a defined timeline.

What Will Make You Stand Out

  • Experience or interest in stormwater BMP design, nature-based stormwater management, floodplain analyses, or ecological restoration.
  • Fieldwork experience, such as conducting grade checks, performing bid spec reviews, or evaluating construction milestones.
  • Familiarity with North and South Carolina riverine systems, coastal environments, or watershed challenges.
  • Passion for integrating ecological principles into engineering solutions.
  • Strong communication skills and a desire to work directly with clients and communities.
