Job Description:

As the Food Safety Manager, you will coordinate efforts around parts of the Big 5 (primarily GMPs, traffic patterns, infrastructure; some equipment sanitary design and sanitation) and the Pathogen Environmental Monitoring (PEM) program.  This US based position will require strong communication with plant partners/leadership, engineering, Operations and EQFS leadership, and other Centers of Excellence that oversee specific programs (sanitation, microbiological testing methods, etc.). 

There are currently thirty production facilities globally, and this candidate would work with each of the facilities on PEM; special events (water intrusion events) escalations , food safety construction plan approvals, facility design, Good Manufacturing Practices (GMPs), training (PEM, swabbing, GMP) validation program requirements, pulling PEM data for audits, prioritizing the food safety capital dollar spend plan, setting up EQMS systems with PEM plan adjustments, leading the monthly all-plant Environmental Monitoring call, and communicating with all levels of the organization about risks and providing guidance.  This role is an indirect leadership position that responds to the needs primarily of the US facilities and program. 

What you’ll Do:

Interface with plants & Engineering:


  • Special events escalations & reports

  • GMP questions and/or outages & policy updates

  • Reviewing and approving Food Safety Construction Plants

  • Guiding PEM investigations, maintaining catalogue of actions for consistency, leading calls

  • Prioritizing the Top 25 food safety capital dollar spend items

  • Training – GMPs, PEM, swabbing, new EQFS partners, food safety construction plan expectations, contractor GMPs, new QATL and QATA on select items

  • Collaborating with teams on new plant builds or renovations that are food safe, meet internal requirements, and are cost effective.

  • EQMS PEM module setup & updates and preparing PEM data for audits

  • Perform PEM audits for adequacy of plan; assist with updates to swab plans afterward

Interface with Home Office:


  • Collaborate on policies and escalations in response to events, audit findings, industry best practices

  • Help ensure adequacy of testing supplies, test method questions, 3rd party labs and investigations.

  • Answer regulatory and/or customer requirements relative to PEM, data sharing.

Interface with Industry:

  • Over time, interface with other industry and/or regulatory meetings to keep current on best practices

Food Safety Functions:

Together with the leadership team, ensures compliance with Food Safety and Food Quality Plans, in addition to customer requirements. Interprets and communicates customer requirements to plant production and/or support groups. Establishes and Audits PCPs, CCPs and Standard Operating Procedures to define and monitor processes, to ensure customer requirements are met. Reviews incidents during which the procedures are not met, and determines appropriate corrective action for partners failing to follow standard procedures.

What you need to succeed:


  • Bachelor's in food safety, microbiology, sanitation, engineering, or another related field.

  • 7-15 years’ experience in Food Safety & quality or Food Manufacturing.​

  • Indirect leadership & ability to influence others.

  • Remaining calm under pressure.

  • Strong moral compass.

  • Ability to interpret microbiology data to tell a story.

  • Good organization skills.

  • Flexibility to take urgent calls; ability to quickly assess a situation and be able to provide guidance.

  • Good oral & written skills (English); other languages are beneficial.

  • Capable of being a trainer with customer-facing professionalism.

  • Ability to travel up to 30%, with more travel during initial training period.
