The communications support position reports to the safety manager and is responsible for all communication duties designated by the manager. Duties and responsibilities may include: communications that pertain to the movement of and locations of persons underground; transport of materials and equipment; belt conveyor, CO and Atmospheric Monitoring Systems (AMS) monitoring; and general, everyday functions of the mine site; MSHA required record-keeping, notifications required by the approved mine Emergency Response Plan and maintaining an accurate and concise pass along log.; as well as monitoring site security cameras. One or more communication personnel must be present in the communication room at all times .
Special Skills or Qualifications :
Must possess a SAFETY-FIRST attitude.
Must possess good verbal and written skills and be capable of communicating clearly and effectively with all site personnel, both verbally and in writing.
Must be able to managecritical incidents/emergency situations and communications.
Must have good typing skills and the ability to apply computer skills to acquire knowledge of company's computer system.
Experience with Windows applications, including Microsoft Excel or equivalent spreadsheet is preferred.
Must be able to work with little or no supervision.
Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license.
Must possess a high-school diploma or GED.
Must be willing to work extended rotating, and weekend shifts as well as holidays.
Additional Expectations:
Must have knowledge of regulations of underground plans and monitoring requirements set forth by MSHA.
Must have knowledge of MSHA laws and regulations applicable to communications with the surface to underground and mine workings.
Must become familiar with all aspects of the mine Emergency Response Plan & capable of being first point of contact.
Must possess the ability to read underground mine maps and keep current on all locations of surface and underground activities.
Must be capable of assigning tracking tags and phones to specific miners by reprogramming them in the system as well as maintaining the database.
Must have knowledge of radio and phone communications, operation of radio dispatch equipment, and standard broadcasting procedures.
Must be able to speak clearly and concisely over the radio or phone.
Must have the ability to maintain a professional relationship with coworkers, supervisors and employees that are using the communications
system even during various stages of emotional stress.
Must maintain confidentiality.
Must be capable of prioritizing and multi-tasking.
Must be able to keep and maintain accurate records.
Must be able to complete tasks in a controlled, effective manner while working under stress.
Must have the ability to make quick and sound decisions with information available in emergencies and routine operations.
Must be capable of learning SAP.
Must maintain a clean and organized work area.
Must keep database updated with current employees and tag numbers
Physical Requirements:
Must have the ability to sit for up to 12 hours.
Must have the ability to walk up and down stairs.
Must have the ability to lift 25 to 50 pounds.
Must have the ability to climb on and off equipment and ladders.
Must be able to have vision for close up computer work as well as distance vision.
