Job Description:

The University of Oklahoma Libraries seeks to recruit a Senior Libraries Web Developer. Working as a member of the University Libraries’ Digital Strategies & Innovation division and reporting to the CID Technical Manager, the Senior Web Developer is responsible for the development and maintenance of the libraries’ websites, including libraries.ou.edu, which supports over 1.3 million views per year from users with a wide variety of information and research needs and provides access to many of the core research tools used on campus. 


The Senior Libraries Web Developer is the libraries’ primary Drupal ecosystem expert, tracking product features, security vulnerabilities, possible alternatives, and the overall upstream roadmaps for our key web platforms. This position is a contributing expert on web accessibility and usability measures for all library platforms, ensuring compliance with legal ADA, WCAG 2.1 AA, and Section 508 requirements and best practices. This position and the required expertise are critical to ensuring the libraries’ website serves as a functional and easy-to-navigate gateway to the libraries’ online resources, and ensuring the websites are compliant with accessibility standards.


Position responsibilities include:



  • Collaborates in creating, maintaining, and updating our web sites and related applications.

  • Directs or performs website updates and edits, writes, or designs website content.

  • Confers with OU Libraries teams to resolve conflicts, prioritize needs, develop content criteria, or choose solutions.

  • Maintains and understands the latest Web applications and programming practices through education, study, and participation in conferences, workshops, and groups.

  • Identifies problems uncovered by customer feedback and testing and corrects or refers problems to appropriate personnel for correction.

  • Determines user needs by analyzing technical requirements and working with stakeholders to identify user and system requirements for new sites, features, or applications.

  • Designs, builds, and maintains website and software applications.

  • Uses scripting or authoring languages, management tools, content creation tools, applications, and digital media including PHP, JavaScript, HTML, web services, APIs, databases, etc. to customize, automate, and extend OU Libraries Drupal sites.

  • Evaluates code to ensure it meets industry standards, including those for accessibility and security, is valid, is properly structured, and is compatible with browsers, devices, or operating systems.

  • Develops or validates test routines and schedules.

  • Ensures test cases mimic external interfaces and address all browser and device types.

  • Performs unit and system testing.

  • Performs related duties as assigned to successfully fulfill the functions of the position.


This position may have the ability to work partially or fully remote pending university administration approvals.

Required Education and Experience: Bachelor's Degree, AND:



  • 60 months of experience as a Web Developer or related field.


Equivalency/Substitution: Will accept 48 months related experience in lieu of the Bachelor's degree for a total of 108 months related experience.


Skills:



  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, including the ability to effectively communicate with end-users of varying technological backgrounds.

  • Strong problem-solving abilities.

  • Leadership skills to effectively coordinate and motivate project team members.

  • Strong time management skills, ability to manage multiple projects at once, and ability to meet assigned deadlines.

  • Experience developing with content management frameworks (e.g. Drupal, WordPress, etc.).

  • Experience developing websites and applications using HTML5, JavaScript, and CSS as well as server site languages (PHP, Python, etc.) and databases.

  • Understanding of mobile design UX/UI and responsive design principles.

  • Experience in Web Accessibility Standards (ADA, WCAG 2.1 AA, and Section 508 accessibility requirements).

  • Ability to learn and support new systems and applications.

  • Ability to develop unique web-based tools customized to meet the needs of University Libraries’ users and staff.

Departmental Preferences:



  • Experience with the Drupal web content management framework.

  • Experience with the Pantheon web hosting platform.

  • Experience with or evidence of understanding academic libraries and their users.

  • Experience with PHP development and strong knowledge of the PHP ecosystem and related tools.

  • Experience with user-centered design processes and methodologies.

  • Experience using website analytics tools (e.g. Google Analytics) to create meaningful reports.
