What's the role?

The Director of Software Engineering is responsible for providing resource management, technical leadership, and quality control in the design and development of state-of-the-art software.

The Director of Software Engineering reports to Head of R&D/Engineering. Also, this position manages team of Software Engineers, works with other R&D Managers and Product Managers throughout XRM, and coordinates software development with other Zeiss sites and external software partners to meet customer needs in a timely manner.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities:


  • Establish pragmatic software performance and quality metrics (organizational, architectural, and project level), benchmark the organization and individuals, and implement performance improvement plans.

  • Establish software architectural framework and a development process that ensures adherence to that framework.

  • Identify state of the art software tools, technology, methodologies, and processes for the software organization. Pilot these in the organization and on projects, Contribute directly to software technical discussions (technology, platforms, architecture and designs) through knowledge and experience in Software Engineering.

  • Plan projects, provide technical direction, and coordinate the efforts of software engineers in performance of assigned projects including identifying risks/issues. Build a multiyear software resourcing strategy and plan balancing the strategic value of work and operational efficiency. Lead, coach, appraise and develop the internal software team, including hiring well qualified personnel, and effectively manage external software partners.

  • Manage software headcount plans and contribute to engineering budgets to achieve business assigned targets.

  • Mentor and develop software team members in software architecture, quality, and user workflows.

  • Work with other departments to plan and develop new software products.

  • Evaluate individual and team performance of the software group, executing development and performance plans as needed.

  • Create a culture of continuous improvement

Do you qualify?

Experience and Education Requirements:


  • BS in Computer Science or other technical or engineering degree required.

  • Fifteen (15) years of applicable experience in commercial software development required.

  • Ten (10) years functional management experience in product development or related roles Five (5) years' experience building high performance organizations

  • Multiple industry software development experience preferred; instrument software experience is ideal.

  • Demonstrated verbal and written communication at the subordinate, peer and project level required and at the executive level desired.

  • Demonstrated leadership in software architectural design and decision-making

  • Demonstrated ability to establish and ensure adherence to operational objectives, work plans, budgets, schedules, and performance requirements.

  • Demonstrated ability to identify and adapt quickly to change and work in highly dynamic environment.

The annual pay range for this position is $183,000 - $229,000

The pay offered for this role may be influenced by factors such as job location, scope of role, qualifications, education, experience, & complexity/specialization/scarcity of talent.
